Overview of Proficy CSense

Proficy CSense is an analytics product suite that is used by engineers to analyze, troubleshoot and mine industrial plant and equipment data, as well as to monitor the performance of processes and equipment, identify causes for variation, reduce variation and optimize these processes and equipment.

The main software components include Troubleshooter, an off-line data preparation, analysis and data mining tool, Architect, a solution development and simulation platform with drag-and drop components to develop and test solutions, and a Run-time environment that supports the deployment and execution of real-time, scheduled and event-based solutions.

Proficy CSense solutions include Analysis & troubleshooting of process performance variability, Monitoring & early detection of process and equipment health & performance deviations including control loops, Prediction of process performance using machine learning, Simulation of process behavior & performance using process digital twin models, Optimization of process settings and setpoints using optimizers and model predictive control.

Unsupported Items and Recommendations

  • Microsoft SQL Server Express is not recommended for running Proficy CSense Runtime Edition in production environments.

  • Consult the Requirements tab of this ebook for a list of supported Operating Systems and SQL Server versions.

Installation

Before Installing

NOTE: The latest Service Pack contains all the changes contained in the previous Service Packs and Sims.

  1. Ensure that your environment meets the minimum hardware and software requirements for Proficy CSense. See the Requirements tab of this ebook to review the minimum and recommended hardware and software requirements, as well as additional system requirements prior to installing CSense.

  2. Exit any existing copies of the Proficy CSense software that you have them running.

  3. Stop all the running Proficy CSense Action Objects.

  4. Log in to Windows with an account that has administrator privileges.

  5. Consider disabling virus-checking software and Internet security applications on your system for the duration of the installation process. These applications may impact on the installation process or cause it to appear unresponsive.

Installing Proficy CSense Service Pack from an electronic distribution

NOTE : CSense Service Packs cannot be uninstalled. This Service Pack requires either Proficy CSense 8.5 English or CSense 8.5 SIM1 to be installed.

  1. Extract the contents of the distributed archive file to a temporary location on your hard drive.

  2. Navigate to the folder containing the extracted archive contents and run the Setup.exe file located in the root folder of the extracted contents.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your installation.

Installing Proficy CSense Service Pack from an electronic distribution (Distributed Deployment)

If CSense is currently installed as a distributed deployment (CSense Data Server and Application Servers installed on separate machines), you must install this service pack on the CSense Data server and then install the service pack on all the CSense Application servers that you are using in the distributed deployment.

Installing the Service Pack on a CSense Data Server

  1. Extract the contents of the distributed archive file to a temporary location on your hard drive.

  2. Navigate to the folder containing the extracted archive contents and run the Setup.exe file located in the root folder of the extracted contents.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your installation.

Installing the Service Pack on CSense Application Servers

NOTE: Ensure that you install the Service Pack on all CSense Application Servers.

Perform the following steps to install the Service Pack on a CSense Application Server:

  1. Extract the contents of the distributed archive file to a temporary location on your hard drive.

  2. Navigate to the folder containing the extracted archive contents and run the Setup.exe file located in the root folder of the extracted contents.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your installation.

After Installing

Licensing your installation of Proficy CSense

Proficy Common Licensing provides a easy-to-use tool to both view and manage software licensing.

To access the help for the Proficy Common Licensing, perform the following steps:

  • From the desktop, select Start > Programs > General Electric > License Help.

  • The Proficy Common Licensing help opens.

Using Process+ App in Operations Hub

After you install your Service Pack, you must update the Process+ app in Operations Hub. The version of the Process+ app shipped with this service pack requires Operations Hub 2022 or later. Please ensure that you have the correct version of Operations Hub installed before you update or deploy the the Control Loop Performance application.

Updating Control Loop Performance application in Operations Hub

The following procedures describes how to update the Control Loop Performance application in Operations Hub, depending on the type of Operations Hub license that you have.

NOTE: Kindly note your Operations Hub license type before you import the app.

Freemium licensed users of Operations Hub

If you are a freemium license user of Operations Hub, follow the below procedure to update the Process+ app in Operations Hub.

  1. Remove the Freemium license from the License Client. This will enable demo/trial mode in Operations Hub.

    NOTE : Ensure that Operations Hub is in demo/trial mode. This can be seen by the notice appearing in Operations Hub that typically includes a countdown timer. If the trial period has expired, restart the machine to reset the trial countdown timer.

  2. Locate the Control Loop Performance application in one of the following places:

    • From the electronic distribution.

      1. Extract the contents of the distributed archive file to a temporary location on your hard drive.

      2. Navigate to the location where you extracted the archive file.

      3. In the root folder, you will see the Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip.

    • Installed with CSense

      1. Install CSense 8.5 SP1.

      2. Navigate to the CSense installation folder\Operations Hub 2022\Control Loop Performancev1.2.zip.

  3. Copy the Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip file to the Operations Hub machine.

  4. Login to the Operations Hub application as the Operations Hub Administrator.

  5. On the APPS page, click Import App and then select Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip.

  6. You will be notified that an application with the name CSense Process+ already exists and that there are conflicts.

  7. Select the replace option and then click OK.

  8. Apply the Freemium license in the License Client.

Premium licensed users of Operations Hub

If you are a premium license user of Operations Hub, follow the below procedure to update the Process+ app in Operations Hub.

  1. Locate the Control Loop Performance application in one of the following places:

    • From the electronic distribution.

      1. Extract the contents of the distributed archive file to a temporary location on your hard drive.

      2. Navigate to the location where you extracted the archive file.

      3. In the root folder, you will see the Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip.

    • Installed with CSense

      1. Install CSense 8.5 SP1.

      2. Navigate to the CSense installation folder\Operations Hub 2022\Control Loop Performancev1.2.zip.

  2. Copy the Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip file to the Operations Hub machine.

  3. Login to the Operations Hub application as the Operations Hub Administrator.

  4. On the APPS page, click Import App and then select Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip.

  5. You will be notified that an application with the name CSense Process+ already exists and that there are conflicts.

  6. Select the replace option and then click OK.

Deploying Control Loop Performance application in Operations Hub

The following instructions will describe how to deploy the Control Loop Performance application on Operations Hub depending on the type of Operations Hub license.

NOTE :The procedure for importing the Process+ app into Operations Hub depends on your Operations Hub license. Please take careful note of your Operations Hub license type before proceeding to attempt to import the app.

Freemium licensed users of Operations Hub (also known as Operations Hub Add On for Historian)

Follow this procedure if you have an Operations Hub Freemium license to deploy the Process+ app in Operations Hub:

  1. Install the Operations Hub 2022 or later, DO NOT APPLY THE OPERATIONS HUB LICENSE. If the license has already been applied, remove it, it can be added again later.

  2. Ensure that Operations Hub is in demo/trial mode. This can be seen by the notice appearing in Operations Hub that typically includes a countdown timer. If the trial period has expired, restart the machine to reset the trial countdown timer.

  3. Ensure that you have enabled CSense data to be read by third party applications.

  4. Locate the Control Loop Performance application in one of the following places:

  5. Copy Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip to the Operations Hub machine.

  6. Login to the Operations Hub 2022 application as the Operations Hub Administrator.

  7. On the APPS page, click Import App and select Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip.

  8. Click DATASOURCES > CSense.

    1. Enter the following to connect to CSense:

      1. Host: The CSense host name.

      2. Port: The SQL Server TCP port number.

    2. Under SQL Authentication settings.

      1. Password: Enter the password set for csense_db_user in the steps under Enabling CSense data to be read by third party applications.

    3. Click Test. If the connection is successful, click Save and Exit.

  9. The following steps will describe how to make the Control Loop Performance application accessible to users who’s not the Operation Hub Administrator:

    1. Click MANAGE > Users.

    2. Create a new user and assign the following:

      1. Group: iqp.user.

      2. Apps: CSense Process+.

      3. Do this for as many users needed.

    3. Click Apps and the button for CSense Process+.

    4. Copy the URL presented and share with the new users.

  10. The new users can browse to the shared URL and login with their credentials.

  11. Apply the Operations Hub license to exit the demo/trial mode for Operations Hub.

Premium licensed users of Operations Hub

Follow this procedure if you have an Operations Hub Premium license to deploy the Process+ app in Operations Hub:

  1. Install the Operations Hub 2022 or later and apply the Operations Hub license.

  2. Ensure that you have enabled CSense data to be read by third party applications.

  3. Locate the Control Loop Performance application in one of the following places:

  4. Copy Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip to the Operations Hub machine.

  5. Login to the Operations Hub 2022 application as the Operations Hub Administrator.

  6. On the APPS page, click Import App and select Control Loop Performance-v1.2.zip.

  7. Click DATASOURCES > CSense.

    1. Enter the following to connect to CSense:

      1. Host: The CSense host name.

      2. Port: The SQL Server TCP port number.

    2. Under SQL Authentication settings.

      1. Password: Enter the password set for csense_db_user in the steps under Enabling CSense data to be read by third party applications.
