Tag Management

About Tags

Tags are used to store the data for specific properties of an asset (for example, boiler pressure, condenser pressure).

Using Analysis V2, you can plot tag data on various types of charts to analyze them.

When you access an analysis view, the following sections are available on the right side of the page:

  • The Tag Browser section: Contains a list of all the tags and tag groups associated with the selected asset (along with tag expressions, if any). In the Tag Browser section:
    • You can add additional assets as needed except for an Event Data Analysis.
    • For SmartSignal tags, the modes and models for both active and inactive tags appear, whereas for other tags, input and output tags appear.
    • You can mute or unmute tags globally.
    • Tag groups appear based on their ordinal number (if assigned in the template) or alphabetical order.
  • The Plotted Tags section: Contains a list of all the tags that are plotted on charts.
    IconPurpose
Provides the names of the cards on which a tag is plotted
Provides the names of charts on the associated card
Indicates tags that are associated with the selected asset during ingestion
Indicates tags that are related to the selected asset, such as wind speed or power output of the asset
Indicates that data is not available for the tag
Note: You can plot tags with no data for a specified time range. The tag appears in the Plotted Tags section but is disabled. When the date range is changed to include the tag data, it appears as enabled and the data is plotted.

About the Tag Browser

The Tag Browser allows you to find tags, view tag information, and plot tags.

The Tag Browser loads the in-context asset and its associated tags by default. You can add additional assets and their associated tags to the Tag Browser. You can view up to 250 tags in the Tag Browser.

You can plot SmartSignal Model groups and tags from the Tag Browser.

The following information appears in the Tag Browser:
  • The asset currently in context.
  • The asset attributes associated with the selected asset. Listed asset attributes are restricted to Reference attributes only.
  • The tag expressions associated with the selected asset.
  • The plotted tags for the selected view.
  • The tag groups associated with the asset.
  • The tag groups that have been deployed.
  • The SmartSignal analytics provide Modes and Models for both active and inactive tags.
  • The non-SmartSignal analytics provide Input Tags and Output Tags.
  • When you hover over the Analytic name, the Analytic deployment name appears.

You cannot add additional assets for Event Data Analysis charts in the Tag Browser, Tag Expressions, or Search Browser panes.

The Tag Browser and Plotted Tags appear in the Tag Panel for both SmartSignal and Analysis V2 cards. The Asset node in the Tag Browser expands to display the All Tags node, the Analytics node, and the Tag Expressions node. Child-Asset nodes are expandable. The Tag Expressions node can be expanded to reveal the relevant tag expressions for the asset context. To view the tag details in a tool tip, hover over a tag in the Tag Browser or in Plotted Tags. The Analytics node expands to display model groups, which also expand to display groups of tags that can be plotted. Tool tips are not available for nodes.

When you use search in the Tag Browser, tags within the selected assets are highlighted as you enter characters.

When you select a view, any tags that are currently plotted in the view appear in Plotted Tags.

Use the Tag Browser to:
  • Plot tags, analytics groups and tags, and tag expressions to the charts for the selected view.
  • Globally mute or unmute tags that appear on the charts for the selected view.
  • Access tag information.
  • Add and remove multiple assets and their associated tags.
  • Search the Tag Browser by tag name or description.
  • View tag groups associated with the asset in the tag tree.
Note: The Analytic tag groups appear in the order of their ordinal numbers in the Analytic Groups section of the Tag Browser, when the tag groups are assigned ordinal numbers in the Analytics template. However, if the Analytic tag groups do not have any ordinal numbers assigned in the Analytics template they appear in the alphabetical order in the Tag Browser.

In Analysis V2 charts, you can drag up to 60 tags to a Time Series, Spiderweb, or Parallel Axis chart in the view singly or in groups. The X-Y and Polar charts are limited to two or three tags per chart, respectively. Double-clicking the heading of Plotted Tags collapses it. You may need to scroll to see all items in a long list of tags in the Tag Browser.

In SmartSignal charts, you can drag up to 60 tags to a Time Series chart in the view singly or in groups.

Removing an asset from the tree does not affect tags already plotted; however, tag expressions listed in the tree may become invalid. The primary asset cannot be removed.

Nodes and tags listed in the Tag Browser appear as specific icons depending on the type of tag:

Search for Asset Tags

About This Task

You can search for the asset tags (including child tags and correlated tags) in the enterprise.
The following conditions apply when you search for a tag:
  • You can use modifiers to build the search query.
  • The assetSourceKey, which is the assetID, is the default context prefix modifier that is used for unique searches. You can also use the assetName as the context prefix modifier if you want to search based on asset names.
  • You can enter special characters in the search criteria to search for tag names with special characters. When you type the special characters asterisk (*), colon(:), and backslash(\) in the Search box as part of the search criteria, you must type a backslash(\) before these characters to escape them. Otherwise, the special characters are displayed as different characters than expected. However, when you copy and paste tag names with these special characters in the Search box, the backslash(\) is added before the specific characters by default. You do not have to add them manually.
  • Wildcard search and usage of modifiers is not supported if you copy and paste the search criteria.
  • A maximum of 250 results is displayed at a time. You can select the maximum number of results to be displayed per page, 40 or 100.
Tip: If your search returns more than 250 results, a hint appears to refine your search.
  • If available, correlated tags and units of measure are displayed in the search results for a tag.

Procedure

  1. Access the chart where you want to search for tags.
  2. In the right pane, select .
    The Tag Search section appears.
  3. Enter one or more modifiers as search criteria.

    <attributeName>The tag attribute.
For example, if you enter manufacturer:GE and ofClass:Turbines into the Search box, all GE turbine asset tags in the enterprise display in the Search Results.
To search for all the tags of GE turbines, enter manufacturer:GE and ofClass:Turbines.
To search for all tags that meet the following criteria:
    • Tag name contains BR1X.
    • Associated with the BFP_1 asset
    • The tags belong to a turbine
    • The tags use ohms as the UoM

    Enter: inContext:BFP_1, ofClass:Turbines, UoM:ohm, BR1X.

  4. Select Search.
The search results (including correlated tags) appear based on the search criteria. You can plot a tag from the search results by dragging and dropping it to a chart.

Plot Tag Groups Associated with an Alert

About This Task

Plot Tags for Time Series Analysis Charts

About This Task

This topic describes how to plot tags and child tags on an Alert Analysis chart or a Time Series Analysis chart.

The following conditions apply when you plot tags:

  • You can plot up to 70 tags in a Time Series Analysis chart. For an X-Y chart, you can plot only 2 tags, whereas for a Polar chart, you can plot up to 3 tags.
  • You can use pre-defined analysis templates to plot tags. Alert Analysis charts contain pre-plotted tags that depend on the analysis template, which is part of the alert template associated with the alert.
  • The source UoM is converted to the standard UoM.
  • Each plotted tag is identified by a unique color, which matches the color of the tag data plotted on the chart. Plotted tags with no data and tags that are not configured do not have a color.
  • Tags that are not configured for an asset or do not have any data do not appear on the chart or the tag register. These tags appear only in the Plotted Tags section on a chart with a not configured (NC) or a no data (ND) indicator.

Procedure

  1. Access the chart on which you want to plot tags.
  2. In the Tag Browser or Plotted Tags section, drag and drop the tag on to the chart. If you want to select a child tag, expand the parent tag.
    The tag is plotted.
    Tip:
    • You can select multiple tags from a single parent node. For example, you can select multiple tags from a single asset, but you cannot simultaneously select tags from another asset or from the Plotted Tags section.
    • You can search for a tag in the Tag Browser section by entering at least three characters in the Search box.

Plot Tags for Event Data Analysis Charts

About This Task

This topic describes how to plot tags and child tags on an Event Data Analysis chart, which uses a selected number of events prior to a date and time to determine the time range to display for the event. You can also specify the number of seconds pre-event and post-event for the amount of data surrounding the selected event.

The following conditions apply when you plot tags:

  • The source UoM is converted to the standard UoM.
  • Each plotted tag is identified by a unique color, which matches the color of the tag data plotted on the chart. Plotted tags with no data and tags that are not configured do not have a color.
  • Tags that are not configured for an asset or do not have any data do not appear on the chart or the tag register. These tags appear only in the Plotted Tags section on a chart with a not configured (NC) or a no data (ND) indicator.
  • You can plot up to 70 tags in an Event Data Analysis chart.

Procedure

  1. Access the chart on which you want to plot tags.

The following conditions apply when you plot a reference curve:

  • You can add a reference curve tag to an X-Y chart as part of a tag series. The Plotted Tags section displays a hierarchy of the cards, charts, and tags that are plotted on a chart. Plotted tags for an X-Y chart are displayed in the Plotted Tags section as tag series.
  • You can remove a tag series from an X-Y chart in both Time Series Analysis and Event Data Analysis views.
  • You can filter tags in reference curves as well.
  • You cannot drag and drop a tag series in the Plotted Tags section.
  • Additional tag series plotted on a chart must match the UoMs of the tag series already plotted.
  • Removing tags that are plotted on multiple charts in a view affects all the charts in the view.
  • You must plot tags associated with a power curve because the tag type is not validated.

Procedure

  1. Access an X-Y (line) or X-Y (scatter) chart.
  2. Drag the reference attribute and drop it onto the X-axis or Y- axis to plot tags associated with a power curve.

Add Multiple Y-Axes to a Chart

About This Task

When plotting tags on a tine series chart, by default, all the tags appear on the same Y-axis. This topic describes how to add multiple Y-axes (one for each tag) and group the tags based on UoM.
The following conditions apply when you add tags to multiple axes:
  • You can add multiple Y-axes only if you select the one-up card layout.
  • Tags with different UoM create different Y-axes.
  • You can add up to six Y-axes to a chart - three on either side of the chart.
  • If you plot a single tag series, the tag name appears on the Y-axis. Tag series is created when two tags are plotted for an X-Y or Polar chart.

Procedure

  1. Access the chart to which you want to add multiple Y-axes.
  2. Select a tag with a UoM different from the UoM of the tag already plotted, and drop it onto the chart.
  3. Select .
    The Analysis chart settings appear.
  4. In the Minimum and Maximum boxes, enter the minimum and maximum limits for the Y-axes respectively.
By default, the limits are set to Automatic and the axes on the chart scale based on the tag data. After you enter the maximum or minimum values, the Y-axes scale based on the entered values. You can use the first y-axis to determine the domain range.
Note: In case of an XY chart, the Minimum and Maximum boxes are displayed for the X-axis also.
  5. Select the Show Multiple Y Axes check box.
  6. Select Apply.
Note: The logical tags are always plotted on the default Y-axes.
  7. Select the tags that you want to plot on various Y-axes and drop them onto the chart.
A new Y-axis appears for each tag that you add. The tags are plotted on multiple Y-axes and appear in the Plotted Tags section. For a Time-Series (Line) chart, however, the logical tags do not appear in the Plotted Tags section.

Add Additional Assets

About This Task

When you create an analysis and add a chart, you select a primary asset from the Asset Hierarchy. This topic describes how to add secondary assets from the Asset Hierarchy to the Tag Browser section. You can then plot tags from these assets to compare time series data for the assets on a single chart. This allows you to look at multiple assets to investigate or isolate an issue.
The following conditions apply when you add tags from multiple assets to a chart:
  • When you select an asset from the Asset Hierarchy, only the primary assets appear. However, the Tag Browser section contains both primary and secondary assets.
  • You cannot add additional assets for Event Data Analysis charts.
  • You can only remove secondary assets in an analysis view; you cannot remove the primary assets.
  • When you remove an asset, you can choose whether to remove any previously plotted tags for this asset from the Plotted Tags section and the charts.
  • You cannot remove assets with tag expressions that are plotted on a chart.

Procedure

  1. Access the chart on which you want to plot tags from multiple assets.
  2. In the Tag Browser section, select .
    The Asset Hierarchy appears.

Focus on a Tag Series in a Chart

About This Task

In an X-Y or Polar chart, you can plot multiple tag series on a single chart. When you have multiple series plotted on a chart, sometimes the tags overlap with one another and the last one that was plotted is the one that is visible on the chart. In order to look at the other series that are not visible, you can bring that series to the front so that you can view the series on top.
The following conditions apply when you focus a tag series:
  • Muted tags are unmuted when they appear.
  • Templates containing multiple tag series do not save the order in which the series appears.
  • If the tags overlap with one another, the last one that was plotted will be visible on the chart.

Procedure

  1. Access the chart on which you want to focus a tag series.
  2. In the Tag Register section, pause over the series you want to focus, right-click, and then select Bring Series to Front.
The selected tag series is focused on the chart.

Mute/Unmute Chart Data

About This Task

You can mute tags, tag series, or tag expressions plotted on a chart to change the data. You can mute tags globally for all charts on the view, or for separate charts.
Note: Chart selection for Event Data Analysis charts is limited to X-Y and Polar charts.

Even after you mute a tag, the color assigned to the tag is retained after you unmute.

Procedure

  • To mute a plotted tag or tag series for all the charts in an analysis view:
    1. Access an adhoc Analysis or Template containing the tag or series that you want to mute.
    2. In the Plotted Tags section, select the color indicator of the tag or tag series.
The selected tag or tag series is muted in all charts in the view.
  • To mute an Event Frame for all the charts in the Event Data Analysis view:
    1. Access an Event Data Analysis Template containing the tag or series that you want to mute.
    2. On the Event Data Analysis view, select the color indicator of the tag located in the Event Frames section.
The selected event frame is muted in all charts in the view.
  • To mute a tag or tag series plotted on a specific chart in the view:
    1. Access an adhoc Analysis or Template containing the tag or series that you want to mute.
    2. In the Tag Register section of the chart, select the color indicator of the plotted tag or tag series.
The plotted data is hidden on that specific chart, and colored line is removed from the register.
  • To mute an Event Frame for a specific chart in the Event Data Analysis view:
    1. Access the Template containing the tag or series that you want to mute.
    2. In the Tag Register section of a selected chart, select the color indicator of the plotted event frame.
The plotted data is hidden on that specific chart, and the colored line is removed from the register.
  • To unmute a tag:
    1. Access the Plotted Tags or the Tag Register section of the analysis view from where you have muted the tag.
    2. Select the gray color indicator of the muted tag.
The tag is unmuted, and the tag data is replotted on the charts. The tag is now indicated by the same color that was assigned before muting the tag.
