Total Power Stability, Any Architecture

AI compute requires mastering the dynamic range between grid-side volatility and load-side demand. The MV-UPS platform acts as an intelligent shield, decoupling your infrastructure from external disturbances while preventing rapid load swings from impacting the grid. This delivers total load immunity—ensuring a constant, high-quality power stream, whether the grid is stable, transitioning, or absent entirely.

The New Foundation for AI Stability

Description

AI-scale data centers face a dual crisis: power demand is outpacing grid reinforcement, and highly dynamic AI workloads are creating rapid, sub-second power swings. This volatility stresses aging infrastructure and triggers stringent grid-code requirements. In an era where power availability is the ultimate constraint on growth, facilities are increasingly exposed to curtailment, regulatory penalties, and costly unplanned downtime.

The MV-UPS acts as a high-speed, intelligent buffer that stabilizes your facility's power quality at the medium-voltage level. Whether operating as a grid-connected interface, an autonomous microgrid, or a bridging power solution, the system creates a stable, private grid for your facility. This architectural innovation serves as the foundation for total load immunity, delivering the following strategic outcomes across any power configuration:

Power Decoupling
Power Decoupling

Achieve 100% decoupling between utility grid dynamics and mission-critical loads. By operating at the medium-voltage level, the system eliminates step-down losses typical of traditional low-voltage configurations and shields AI and data center workloads from grid-side transients, voltage dips, and frequency fluctuations.

Seamless Bridging & Islanded Capability
Seamless Bridging & Islanded Capability

Ensure continuous operation regardless of grid status. The MV-UPS functions as an intelligent bridge between grid-connected and autonomous modes, providing the grid-forming capabilities required to stabilize facilities during microgrid or islanded operations.

Enhanced Grid Compliance & Stability
Enhanced Grid Compliance & Stability

Optimize utility interaction through precise, high-speed power regulation. The system provides full reactive power control and fault ride-through protection, ensuring facilities meet strict connection requirements while maximizing power quality for internal processes.

Monetizable Energy Asset Management
Monetizable Energy Asset Management

Transform power architecture from a cost center into a strategic asset. By leveraging integrated energy storage, the MV-UPS enables revenue-generating ancillary services—including peak shaving, load shifting, and demand response—to optimize total cost of ownership and support long-term decarbonization goals.

KEY OUTCOMES

Comprehensive fault immunity at the medium voltage level eliminates redundant downstream LV-UPS systems — saving ~15% in total power distribution CAPEX and freeing square footage for additional IT racks.

Complete grid isolation and ancillary service support streamline Transmission System Operator (TSO) discussions and accelerate interconnection, compressing time-to-revenue.

A fully decoupled, islanded power interface eliminates bidirectional fault propagation. Voltage dips, frequency events, and grid faults are managed directly at the medium voltage level — handled natively in the converter, without downstream mitigation hardware.

MV-UPS: MVDC HALL SIDE

Explore the key features and capabilities of the MV-UPS system below.

Battery storage becomes a revenue-generating asset — peak shaving, load shifting, and load shedding monetize capacity that would otherwise sit idle, shifting MV-UPS from cost center to profit-contributing infrastructure.

Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC)

Featuring an industry-proven Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) core, this system has been refined across generations of Electric Arc Furnace deployments—workload profiles that NERC confirms closely mirror the rapid-load fluctuations of AI training. Rated at 175 MW/200 MVA.

Medium Voltage (MV) Storage

Integrated batteries provide sub-cycle load immunity by dynamically absorbing or injecting power to balance grid input against demand. This ensures an ultra-fast response to aggressive ramp rates and volatile power swings.

Three ways mv-ups keeps power stable

Grid-Connected

+
Grid-connected: stable for the utility, steady for the load

The MV-UPS provides grid–load decoupling between the utility feed and the data hall, in both directions. The grid sees a controlled draw. The load sees grid-forming power.

  • Regulates grid-side draw to meet AI-era interconnection requirements
  • Absorbs sub-second load swings with integrated battery storage
  • Provides fault ride-through, managing HVRT/LVRT and transient overvoltage at medium voltage

Bridging Power

+
Bridging power: energized before the utility connection

Bridging power runs an AI campus on on-site gas generation while the utility connection is built, then transfers the site to grid supply. The MV-UPS is the Stability Block between generator and compute.

  • Regulates the draw on the generator, so the turbine sees a smoothed profile
  • Keeps load pulsations off the turbine shaft
  • Holds voltage and frequency for the halls from the first GPU delivery

Islanded

+
Islanded: grid-forming power with no grid behind it

Islanded, the campus runs on its own generation with no operating grid connection. Nothing outside the site sets voltage or frequency, so the MV-UPS does.

  • Grid-forming on the load side, with integrated storage absorbing load swings so generators see a regulated draw
  • Gas turbine soft start and black start, 0 to 100% speed
  • Removes the requirement for secondary diesel backup

Electric arc furnace pedigree, applied to AI load swings

The MV-UPS runs on Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) technology, built on multiple generations of deployment in demanding environments, including electric arc furnaces.¹ NERC lists arc furnaces alongside AI data centers as large loads with variable, cyclical profiles that can introduce forced oscillations into the grid.² The MV-UPS applies that technology to load swing absorption for AI training loads at 34.5 kV.¹

Learn more about MV-UPS

Traditional BESS shunt systems cannot provide 100% decoupling because they are connected in parallel with the load. The GE Vernova MV-UPS is a series-connected solution that provides total isolation between grid and load dynamics. This means that if a fault occurs on the grid side, your critical loads are completely shielded by the DC bus, a level of protection shunt systems physically cannot guarantee.

Yes, by integrating medium-voltage conversion and energy storage, the system removes the need for large, redundant low-voltage UPS systems and their associated switchgear. This significantly simplifies the downstream electrical distribution, allowing you to reclaim valuable square footage that would otherwise be dedicated to LV equipment. In high-density AI data centers, this footprint recovery directly translates to more rack space and higher revenue-generating capacity.

It is critical to integrate the MV-UPS concept during the "Concept and Planning" (Phase 1) stage. Because the system handles medium voltage directly, it replaces large portions of the conventional electrical distribution architecture. If you wait until later stages to decide, you may find that the physical footprint or infrastructure requirements for the MV-UPS were not accounted for, making retrofitting difficult or impossible.

AI-driven workloads create "violent" load swings (20% to 80% of multi-hundred MW) that can cause significant torsional stress on turbines. Unlike standard systems that pass some of this stress through to the generator, the MV-UPS absorbs these rapid fluctuations entirely. By providing a stable, grid-forming output, the MV-UPS ensures the turbine sees a controlled, predictable load, preventing accelerated wear and potential failure.
