Ether-1000 Unit, Built for Critical Ethernet Communications

Unparalled network security and performance for mission critical applications, creating up to four distinct Ethernet WANs, each with its own configurable, dedicated bandwidth and tightly controlled access privileges.

Flexible port granularity and a wide range of 10/100/1000 Mb/s fiber optic and copper interface connection choices for Ethernet devices tailor equipment solutions to individual site requirements. The Ether-1000 unit is an application interface unit of the Lentronics Multiplexers digital transport and access system, designed specifically for electric utilities, pipeline, transportation and heavy industrial telecommunication requirements.

The Ether-1000 unit provides integrated intelligent multi-port switch features and Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS) transport, delivering secure, priority based, Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) LAN extension services.

Redundant configurable bandwidth (CBW) interface connections to a JungleMUX SONET or TN1U/TN1Ue SDH node’s optical transceiver units, enable protected SONET/SDH transport of Ethernet frames at incremental rates from 50 Mb/s to 1.2 Gb/s.

With this technique, the original packet integrity is preserved, eliminating any risk of external unauthorized access.

  • SONET/SDH for dependable Ethernet transport
    Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS) is a natural technology choice for critical packet-based applications. EoS through its intended design by the telecommunications industry, has a low latency forwarding mechanism in addition to offering guaranteed traffic accessibility and isolation within a dedicated portion of the payload. Additionally, SONET/SDH provides the framework for extremely high network availability with tightly controlled timing, fast protection switching and fault isolation of each independent connection, of which a wide range of payload types are supported.

    A GE Lentronics network equipped with Ether-1000 units offers additional EoS advantages. These strive to balance the conflicting need for absolute determinism of mission critical services with latency sensitive services with the bandwidth transport demands of an abundance of less latency sensitive less critical packet-based applications, while providing the ultimate in traffic security and dependability.

    Ethernet Security
    Proper access control for network administrators, maintenance staff and connected Ethernet devices is mandatory to create a secure network environment.

    A Lentronics SONET/SDH system containing Ether-1000 units can be protected using unique configurable features to permit authorized user and Ethernet device access, while eliminating unauthorized entry.
    Performance policies
    Access to the security, and bridging and performance policies maintained within the Ether-1000 unit are protected through:

    Physical access constraints
    Network administrator and local maintenance access ports, both of concern to NERC, are physically decoupled from the unit’s Ethernet data ports, providing. a network wide electronic security perimeter.

    Cyber access restrictions

    Unit Locking All Ether-1000 units are locked from local and remote configuration changes. Authorized NMS administrators can grant temporary access to field service personal, then relock the unit.

    Secure Tag GE’s EoS solution protects critical policies across a network of Ether-1000 units achieving secure, end-to-end service guarantees.

    Ensuring trusted access
    Secured Ports prevent additional MAC address learning, creating a static environment of approved attached devices.

    Port hiberenation if configured, can block all port traffic upon detection of loss of port connection.

    Disabling of Unused Ports eliminates unauthorized access through these routes.

    Trusted MAC addresses are entered into the unit by authorized network administrators and are preserved during power failures.

    Unknown MAC Address Filtering ensures that secured ports do not bridge packets when the destination address is unknown, preventing unauthorized learning of remote network devices.


    Local Ethernet Device Port Connections
    The Ether-1000 unit’s Quad Port Assembly options provide flexible granularity from 1 to 8 ports, as well as
    a wide variety of 10/100/1000 Mb/s interface connection choices for local Ethernet devices, tailoring equipment investment to site requirements.

    Copper (Cu) and fiber optic port options are compatible with 10BaseT/ 100BaseTX, 100BaseFX, 100BaseLX, 1000BaseSX and 1000BaseLX.

    Ethernet loading is optimized by per port ingress and egress rate limit settings. Traffic priority and a specific Ether-1000 unit WAN # (EoS pipes) assignment can be designated on a per port basis.

    An Ether-1000 unit paddleboard equipped with up to two Quad Port Assemblies is mounted securely on the rear of the Lentronics equipment shelf, mating via a shelf backplane thru connector with the Ether-1000 unit. Power is delivered via the shelf’s redundant power supplies.
