HVDC SYSTEMS

Connecting Renewable Energy and Power Grids for a Sustainable Future

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems enable utilities to move more power further, efficiently integrate renewables, interconnect grids, and improve network performance. HVDC systems utilize power electronics technology to convert AC and DC voltage and are ideal for supporting existing systems or building new power highways.

GE Vernova is globally recognized for designing, manufacturing and delivering customized HVDC solutions for utilities worldwide. With over 130 years of pioneering experience, GE Vernova offers two HVDC technologies, Line Commutated Converters (LCC) and Voltage-Sourced Converters (VSC), to support a broad range of applications and deployable in different schemes including overhead line (point to point), back to back, submarine/land cable and offshore.

Every HVDC solution is tailored and designed based on a project-by-project assessment of the customers' individual requirements, whether it's for connecting offshore wind generation, long distance power transmission, or energy trading between independent networks.

HVDC - how does it work

At the core of this technology are ultra high performance converter stations which transform high voltage AC into DC. The electricity is then transported as Direct Current via high voltage transmission lines over distances of up to several thousands of kms.

HVDC Valve Testing Facility in Stafford, UK

GE Vernova's new state-of-the-art HVDC Valve Testing Facility (VTF) in Stafford, UK is the world's first fully programmable waveform generator for HVDC valves. With test capabilities up to 90,000 volts and 6,000 amps for both LCC and VSC technologies, the VTF gives you testing accuracy like never before.

Wild Series on HVDC

“Tested” host Adam Savage and “Innovation Nation” correspondent Alie Ward travel to Germany to visit the facility where GE Vernova builds the world’s largest power transformer. From there, Adam and Alie board a helicopter to visit the DolWin Alpha Offshore Converter in the North Sea and the facility where the wind power is converted to help power one million German homes.

HVDC VALVES

MaxSine™, GE Vernova’s Most Advanced HVDC Valve

Utilizing cutting-edge technological advancements, GE Vernova has developed its most advanced MaxSine™ valve specifically to address the complex challenges of the grid. MaxSine™ is a Modular Multi-Level Converter (MMC) consisting of multiple submodules connected in series to form a “chain-circuit”. With this topology, quasi-sinusoidal voltage waveforms can be created and no filter is required for connection to the grid.
