GE’s Grid Solutions delivers first digital substation in Colombia
GE’s Grid Solutions delivers first digital substation in Colombia

Colombian energy company Enel-Codensa recently announced that Colombia's first digital substation has started operations using our GE’s Grid Solutions’ equipment. The digital substation enables autonomous decisions and facilitates the operation of energy transmission.

In collaboration with Soltec, a leading company in the manufacture and supply of solar trackers, our team proudly delivered a technological breakthrough – and more importantly, contributed to bring clean energy to millions of Colombians. Considerable time and cost savings were achieved during the various phases of the project, including an 80% reduction in the use of copper cables.

According to Fernando Rodriguez, GE’s Grid Solutions Grid Automation Commercial Director in LATAM region, the technology used in this digital substation in Colombia facilitated its installation and entry into operation, even in the context of pandemic biosecurity measures. "With digital solutions installed, processes such as maintenance and reconfiguration can be performed more easily and efficiently. In addition, through the digitization, substation data can be accessed easily and immediately," said Fernando.

Digital substations represent the transition from analog to digital technology and are an important milestone for the electricity sector. Considering the lower installation times as well as the power and quality of services, its benefits will also positively impact the community, distributing energy in a more reliable, sustainable, and accessible way for millions of people’s day-to-day lives.

Commenting on this milestone, Nicolas Gibergues, Grid Automation Leader, GE’s Grid Solutions, said, “Digital substation’s advanced functionalities, reduced footprint and accelerated deployment is a key enabler of the energy transition. Digital substation architecture flexibility helps our customers integrate new renewable sources of energy while reducing costs.”
