Configure the Production Rate Specification for OEE

The Production Rate specification contained in the Production tab of the Production Metrics is used by Plant Applications to calculate the Ideal Production Rate used in OEE calculations. Products are assigned to production units to signify that these are the possible products that can run on those units. Specification variables are attached to production units, and also assigned to a characteristic which represents the product. The end result is a Production Rate specification that indicates the ideal rate that a product should be able to run on that unit or line. The specification is a rate and is therefore written as product units per time of measure, for example, 100 units per hour. In Production Metrics, you choose the time units (per day, hour, minute, or second) that actually determines the rate. This specification must be configured in order for Plant Applications to calculate OEE.

About this task

As an example, you have a product called "25 inch tyres," for which you want to calculate OEE.

Procedure

  1. Under Product Management in the Server Manager tree, go to Product Property, right-click and select New Property, then click Generic/Quality.
A new editable field appears under Product Property.
  2. Add a Product Property as the Generic/Quality property and enter the name, for example, OEE.
When you expand OEE, the following three folders appear:
    • Characteristic Groups
    • Characteristics
    • Specification Variables
  3. Right-click Characteristics and select Add New Characteristic.
A new editable field appears under Characteristics.
  4. Enter the name of the new characteristic as Production rate and press Enter.
  5. Right-click Specification Variables and select Add New Specification.
A new editable field appears under Specification Variables.
  6. Enter the name of the new specification variable as OEE.
  7. Right-click Product Property OEE and select Enter Specifications for OEE.
The Pick Transaction dialog box appears.
  8. Click OK.
    The Specification Management window appears.
  9. Click Add Properties and Characteristics ()
    The Characteristics dialog box appears.
  10. From the Unloaded list, select characteristic 'Production rate' and click Move Selected ( ) to load the selected characteristic.
  11. Close the Characteristics dialog box and return to the Specification Management window.
  12. In the Production rate Target field, enter the target rate. For example, 100 units.
  13. Close the Specification Management window.
    The Confirmation dialog box appears.
  14. Click Yes to approve the transaction.
  15. Right-click the assigned unit in the Plant Model and select Edit [Unit Name] Properties.
The Unit Properties Configuration window appears.
  16. In the Unit Properties Configuration > Production Metrics > Production tab, select "OEE/OEE" as the Production Rate Specification.
Here, you also specify the time factor, which determines the rate in Production Rate Time Measurement Units. In other words, if the specification is 100 units per hour, you can select "Hour" as the Time Units.
  17. Click Save.
