Our 4Rs Circularity Approach: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reducing our environmental impact through increased efficiency, lower emissions, and by promoting circularity is central to our operations, product development and deployment. We are pursuing our 2030 Scope 1 and 2 carbon neutrality commitment with the same rigor and lean approach with which we run our business. To ensure we account for the impacts of the full lifecycle of our products, we are embedding our ‘4Rs’ Circularity Framework into all parts of our business, aiming to ensure that our innovations are driven by the ambition to Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle our use of natural resources and our impact on the planet.

Our Leading Goals and Metrics

Our leading goals and metrics provide focus to our sustainability strategy, helping to focus our efforts where it matters most. Each goal is supported by key metrics, designed to drive progress across the whole organization and enable transparent reporting on progress.

Our 2030 Carbon Neutral Ambition

We aim to electrify and decarbonize our own operations in line with our energy transition vision. Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in our operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2030.

To achieve this goal, our businesses are making operational investments in energy efficiency, reducing emissions from the grid through smart power sourcing, and using lean practices to eliminate energy waste.

We are focused on driving emission reductions to achieve carbon neutrality, with the aim of at least a 50% absolute reduction by 2030. Where necessary we will balance remaining emissions with carbon offsets or removals.

Post 2030, we will continue to reduce our emissions and any offsets in line with our 2050 Net Zero Ambition for our own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) as well as the emissions from the use of our products (Scope 3).

2019

In 2019, GE committed to achieving carbon neutrality for its own operations by 2030. GE Vernova is upholding this commitment.

2022

28% reduction in emissions from our own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) between 2019 and 2022.³

2030

We have committed to be carbon neutral in our own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2030

We are reducing emissions by:

Operational improvements in energy efficiency and SF₆ reduction

Reducing emissions from the grid through smart power sourcing and renewable energy utilization

Using lean practices to eliminate energy waste

Education, action, and best practice sharing across businesses to operationalize our commitment

28%

reduction in emissions from our own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) between 2019 and 2022³

We are reducing emissions by:

Our Scope 3 Net Zero Ambition

In addition to our 2030 carbon neutrality commitment for our own operations, we have set an ambition to be net zero by 2050 for the Scope 3 emissions from the use of our sold products

Grid Solutions’ Leakage Reduction

Grid Solutions’ Leakage Reduction

Our Grid Solutions team in Villeurbanne, France, upgraded sensors that detect leakages of sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆), a greenhouse gas with 25,000 times the comparative global warming potential of CO₂, and was able to deliver a SF₆ reduction equivalent to more than 750 tons of CO₂.

Investing in Wind Power in Spain

Investing in Wind Power in Spain

In 2022, our Wind businesses signed a European virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with partner Forestalia, which contributes to the development of a 21 MW wind farm in Zaragoza, Spain, powered by our onshore wind turbines. In addition to the carbon savings, the PPA is expected to deliver significant financial benefits, demonstrating how decarbonization is part of strengthening industry competitiveness.

Sharing Lean Practices Across Gas Power Sites

Sharing Lean Practices Across Gas Power Sites

In 2022, teams across 24 sites focused on energy outputs from lighting, HVAC, compressed air, welding, large equipment, transport, and recycling, as well as the culture of energy savings. These changes resulted in an average saving of 9% energy usage per site, with combined savings of 43 million kilowatt hours (kWh), enough to power nearly 3,800 US homes for a year.

FIND OUT ABOUT THE OTHER PILLARS OF OUR SUSTAINABILITY FRAMEWORK

The four pillars of our sustainability framework work together to help create a more equitable, thriving planet for everyone.

¹ To achieve carbon neutrality in our own operations by 2030, we have a target to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 50%. While we are focused on driving absolute reductions to achieve carbon neutrality, we will balance remaining emissions with carbon offsets.

² Top products means products representing 90% sales (US $) in 2022.
