Newmont uses on-site power generation and sells excess power back to the utility. Adding series capacitors to the grid exposed Newmont’s generators to severe system disruptions that could cause on-site generation to break down, resulting in outages and lost revenue.

The Canadian government wanted to understand the impact of raising the contribution of wind energy to its provincial power systems. They needed to know how to effectively integrate large amounts of wind within the provinces.
Analysis by GE Consulting Services shows that Canada can get more than one-third of its electricity from wind without compromising grid reliability, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and generating new export opportunities.
A severe winter storm damaged several parts of the electric grid in Potsdam, putting facilities with critical power needs at risk. In some cases, power was interrupted for a few hours, and in some places, the grid was unavailable for several days. In many cases, back-up power was insufficient.

As distributed solar has grown in its service territory, Colorado Springs Utilities wanted to identify ways to mitigate potential cost-shifting between solar and non-solar customers within the same rate class. Often, utilities must purchase this generation whether it is needed or not, which makes it challenging to balance supply and demand.
GE Consulting Services compared the impact of retaining net energy metering (NEM) versus other options. Determined that alternative rate designs could more adequately recover the costs of serving solar customers, enabling Springs Utilities to more sustainably scale distributed solar and other distributed energy resources.
The CLEAR Microgrid Feasibility Studies supported energy resilience investments in Massachusetts by advancing energy resilience system designs for critical facilities in various qualified municipalities. To achieve this, GE Consulting Services and other consultants provided techno-economic analysis to Massachusetts communities in performing feasibility studies for microgrid solutions. GE Consulting Services and its subcontractor, Resource Innovations, also produced a Resiliency Toolkit to help communities identify and reduce the burden of undertaking a resiliency project.
