SÂO PAULO, Brazil (September 14, 2026) - SPIC Brasil, operator of the São Simão Hydroelectric Power Plant (UHE), located on the border between Goiás and Minas Gerais, and GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE:GEV) today announced the successful completion of the modernization of Generating Unit (UG) 3. This is the third unit, out of a total of six, to undergo complete renovation. This milestone was achieved in 10.3 months, a shorter period than that recorded in the previous units and below the regulatory limit of 12 months established by the National System Operator (ONS) and the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).
The modernization of the 1,710 MW power plant, which supplies energy to approximately 6 million homes, is being carried out by a consortium led by GE Vernova and including Powerchina, responsible for supplying the hydromechanical, SDSC, and electrical and mechanical BOP systems. By integrating specialized engineering, proprietary technology, and a unified focus on operational excellence, the project helps ensure that the plant will operate with superior reliability for the next 30 years.
Technical execution and operational synergy
The project involved extremely complex logistical and engineering challenges. The dismantling phase alone, necessary to begin the modernization, took approximately three months. During the process, teams moved gigantic structures, handling parts weighing up to 410 tons, including the operation of a 12-meter-high railcar gate.
With the delivery of UG3, the schedule is progressing and the team is already preparing for the shutdown of UG1, which will be the fourth generating unit on the list to begin its modernization cycle.

GE Vernova manages the entire engineering, integration, installation, and commissioning process for the plant’s main systems, including turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment.

Project scope and strategic investment
The robust modernization program is driven by an investment exceeding R$ 1.2 billion distributed over ten years. The initiative aims to increase the efficiency, reliability, and safety of the São Simão Hydroelectric Plant, helping to support its operational excellence for another three decades.
The complete project for the six units is expected for completion in 2029 and is structured in seven major packages, ranging from the replacement of transformers and the refurbishment of overhead cranes to the complete transition of control systems – which will change from an analog architecture to a 100% digital one.
