GE Vernova to support modernization of Rio Tinto’s Isle Maligne hydropower plant in Canada

5 min read
  • GE Vernova and Rio Tinto are collaborating to upgrade eight turbine-alternator units at the plant

  • The project aims to enhance the performance and lifetime of the nearly 100-years old plant

  • The modernization will help Rio Tinto supply energy for its five low-carbon aluminum smelters in the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec

BROSSARD, CANADA (June 26, 2025) GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced today that it has secured an order from Rio Tinto, one of Canada's largest private producers of hydroelectricity, for the upgrade of eight turbine-alternator units at the Isle Maligne hydropower plant in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada. The plant features twelve Francis hydropower units in total.

The modernization of this nearly 100-year-old hydropower plant is expected to enhance the performance of the units and their lifetime for decades to come. It will help Rio Tinto supply energy for its five low-carbon aluminum smelters facility in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean.

Last year, under a previous agreement, GE Vernova modernized one generator at the Isle-Maligne plant. After that, Rio Tinto and GE Vernova made the decision to issue a more holistic approach for the modernization of the remaining eight turbine-alternator units. This larger and longer-term scope will enable early engagement and close collaboration between the two companies. It gives the visibility needed to plan, design, and secure the supply chain, providing Rio Tinto with an optimized project schedule and reduced total cost of ownership, while ensuring efficient and timely project execution. The first unit modernization in expected in 2026 and the last one by 2032.

This project is the result of the longstanding collaboration between Rio Tinto and GE Vernova, which involved work on several hydropower plants located in the province of Quebec, Canada, such as Shipshaw.

Sébastien Ross Managing Director for Atlantic Operations, Rio Tinto Aluminium said: “The Isle-Maligne hydroelectric power plant has been a strategic asset for Rio Tinto for 100 years, drawing on the expertise and dedication of multiple generations of employees and business partners. This major investment to modernise our facilities will ensure the long-term future and competitivity of our low carbon aluminium production in Quebec for decades to come for our Canadian and American customers.’’

Frederic Ribieras, Hydro Power CEO, GE Vernova, said: “This modernization project at the Isle Maligne plant is a testament of how we can achieve greater efficiency and performance without altering the core infrastructure. And, this long-term collaboration will be critical to help secure the supply chain in a capacity-constrained market, with pressure on the industry to execute on many projects.”

Canada has one of the least carbon intensive energy systems in the world, in large part thanks to hydropower, which supplies around 60% of the country’s electricity needs. However, the average age of hydropower plants in Canada is 53 years old. By 2050, electricity demand is expected to double in Canada. Modernizing its existing hydropower fleet will be essential to meet that growing demand with clean and reliable power.

In Canada, GE Vernova’s team of over 2,000 talented employees, backed by a legacy spanning more than 130 years, is driving meaningful change by supporting our customers from coast to coast to coast with power generation, transmission, conversion, storage, and orchestration solutions.

GE Vernova secures order from Dominion Energy for the modernization of Saluda Hydro power plant in South Carolina

8 min read
  • GE Vernova secured an order from Dominion Energy South Carolina for the modernization of two hydropower units installed at the Saluda Hydro power plant

  • This new collaboration builds on the long-lasting relationship between GE Vernova and Dominion Energy

  • The modernization project will help to improve the water quality of the river by increasing dissolved oxygen through the implementation of GE Vernova’s patented aerating turbine technology

GREENVILLE, SC  (December 2, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced today that it has secured an order (3Q’2024) with Dominion Energy South Carolina for the modernization of two hydropower units installed at the Saluda Hydro power plant located on the Saluda River in the Southeastern region of the United States, approximately 10 miles west of the city of Columbia, South Carolina. This modernization project will help extend the lifetime, reliability, performance, and operational flexibility of the power plant that has been generating sustainable and reliable power for almost a century.

This new collaboration builds on the long-lasting relationship between GE Vernova and Dominion Energy across all three GE Vernova business segments, Power, Wind and Electrification. Currently, around 70% of Dominion Energy’s fleet leverages GE Vernova’s technology, which can deliver the electricity needed to power the equivalent of more than 7 million households in the US.

In addition to extending the lifetime and enhancing the performance of the plant, the modernization project will help to better maintain the water quality of the Saluda River by increasing dissolved oxygen (DO) through the implementation of GE Vernova’s patented aerating turbine technology. This new equipment oxygenates the water and ensures a minimum level of oxygen, contributing to protect aquatic life and the state’s natural resources. Aerating turbines is one of many examples demonstrating how innovations are being applied to an established industry like hydropower.

Saluda Hydro is an almost-100-years-old power plant that includes five Francis hydropower units. The plant has been in commercial operation since December 1st, 1930, and its fifth hydropower unit was added in 1971 to increase the output and capacity of the dam to 206 megawatts (MW). At the time, the hydropower dam was built to support the growth of the textile industry in Columbia through affordable and reliable energy supply, and for water supply, flood control, and recreation purposes. The construction of the dam formed a 48,000 acres reservoir called Lake Murray. Today, Lake Murray is used by many South Carolina residents for fishing, paddling, swimming, and picnicking.

"Our current turbines at Saluda Hydro have performed safely and successfully for more than 90 years," said Dominion Energy Vice President of Generation Iris Griffin. "Investing in their replacement will help maintain the facility's long-term reliability and, most importantly, continue to safely serve our customers for many years to come.”

Frederic Ribieras, Hydro Power CEO, GE Vernova, said:Our team is delighted to bring its advanced solution to a site that has been serving the state for almost a century. This project shows that through both electricity generation and water management, hydropower can provide many benefits to communities, for a very long time”.

GE Vernova’s scope of work includes the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation of an aerating turbine to replace the Unit 1 and Unit 3 turbines, as well as the rehabilitation of the Unit 3 generator. The first unit is expected to be retrofitted by 2027. GE Vernova has been developing patented and advanced aerating hydropower turbine technology and has been at the forefront of dissolved oxygen innovation with over 20 years of Research & Development. The company implemented several projects in that space, in the United Stated and beyond, such as the High Rock project in North Carolina.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s report, hydropower currently accounts for nearly 27% of total US utility-scale renewable electricity generation and 5.7% of total US utility-scale electricity generation.

“As one of the oldest sources of renewable energy in the country, the ~100 gigawatts (GW) installed base is aging, and we see large opportunities for modernization projects to enabling to deliver even more renewable energy into the grid and help accelerate the energy transition in the country,” commented Frederic Ribieras

GE Vernova to supply synchronous condensers equipment to help improve grid stability in Northern Chile

7 min read
  • GE Vernova will supply four synchronous condensers and high-voltage substation for the Ana Maria and Monte Mina substation projects owned by Transelec in Chile

  • Both projects were part of the tender for “Voltage Control by Short Circuit Current Contribution”, as part of the Chilean Government’s plan to support the energy transition and decarbonization in the country

  • Synchronous condensers associated with advanced grid technologies and systems supplied by GE Vernova can help support a decarbonized and more secured energy transition in Latin America

SANTIAGO, CHILE (July 12, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced today that it has secured an order with Transelec Holdings Rentas Ltd, a leading provider of high voltage systems in Chile, to deliver synchronous condensers and high-voltage substation for the Ana Maria and Monte Mina substation projects in Northern Chile. These two projects were part of a tender for “Voltage Control by Short Circuit Current Contribution”, which is part of the Chilean Government’s plan to support the energy transition and decarbonization in the country.

A synchronous condenser is a large rotating generator engineered to improve voltage regulation and provide energy security and grid support and stabilization. As wind and solar power generation is increasing in the Northern Region of Chile, synchronous condensers are expected to play a critical role in enabling the addition of renewable energy to the grid, providing the needed inertia to help avoid risks of blackouts.

With these projects, GE Vernova’s Hydro Power business will supply two synchronous condensers for the Ana María project and two others for the Monte Mina project. The scope of work also includes engineering, electrical and mechanical auxiliaries, control system, protection system, assembly at site supervision, and commissioning. Additionally, GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business will supply the 220 kV high-voltage substation including electrical engineering, transformers, GIS (Gas Insulated Substation), protection and control system (digital solution), testing and commissioning to connect the synchronous condensers island with the transmission systems. The commercial operation of the project extension expected to begin in 2027.

“GE Vernova has been committed to helping accelerate the energy transition in Latin America for a long time and we believe that the synchronous condenser is a key technology to help with grid challenges,” said Frederic Ribieras, Hydro Power CEO, GE Vernova.  “GE Vernova has experience through its large synchronous condenser installed base that have similarities with the engineering of a hydroelectric generator. And, we have the manufacturing capacity and knowledge to produce it in our factory in Taubaté, Brazil.”

In the past seven years, GE Vernova has also supplied seven synchronous condensers in Brazil, and this synchronous condenser order in Chile follows a similar project just announced in the United States, where four GE Vernova synchronous condensers will be delivered to help improve grid stability in upstate New York.

“GE Vernova’s high-voltage portfolio and flexible AC transmission systems are key to supporting the energy transition, facilitating the expansion and modernization of the grid,” said Johan Bindele, head of Grid Systems Integration at GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business.  “As a reliable player with a presence in Chile for almost a century, GE Vernova actively contributes to the country’s energy transition plans with a broad portfolio of advanced solutions.”

GE Vernova maintains a global reach and scale necessary to lead the energy transition to an electrified and decarbonized future. In Latin America, with approximately 6,600 employees working across the region, GE Vernova is serving its customers by providing solutions, such as the ones supplied to Transelec in Chile, to create a more reliable and sustainable electric power system, underpinning the progress and prosperity of the communities where the company operates.
