A collaboration between: GE Vernova Advanced Research, GE Vernova Grid Software, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Georgia Institute of Technology
October 2026 – GE Vernova Advanced Research is leading the development of a Dynamic Grid Foundational Model (DynaGridFM) with the purpose of transforming grid operations by providing rapid, trustworthy, and proactive decision support for orchestrating a flexible and hybrid AC/DC transmission grid with various inverter-based resources.
This project, known as Dynamic Grid Foundation Model-Based Rapid Decision Support for Fully Dynamic Grid (DynaGridFM), will deliver a first-of-its-kind multi-task, multi-interval grid operational foundation model that not only provides look-ahead analysis but recommends actions to properly and proactively respond.
The proposed technology leverages recent advances in generative artificial intelligence, time-series modeling, and graph neural networks to speed up look-ahead analysis, enable proactive identification of violation and stability risks, and recommend robust mitigation actions. This foundation model will be integrated with novel GPU-accelerated grid optimizers to verify and refine AI recommendations for grid operators to increase network utilization, flexibility, and reliability.
The proposed technology will be applicable to transmission grid operators, independent system operators, regional transmission organizations, and vertically integrated utilities, who are managing increasingly complex grids with grid following and grid forming inverter-based resources (IBRs), variable renewable energy (wind and solar), storage, high voltage DC (HVDC) converters, and synchronous generators.
This 2-year project is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E). They are providing a total of $3.43 million under their Vision OPEN 2024 program. Vision OPEN 2024 aims to advance transformative energy breakthroughs to enable a future energy landscape that is dramatically different than today’s.
