A collaboration between: Brookhaven National Laboratory (prime), GE Vernova Advanced Research, and more than 25 industry, academia, and government institutions
October 2026 – GE Vernova Advanced Research will collaborate with Brookhaven National Laboratory and more than two dozen entities to develop and validate a grid foundation model (GridFM) that can rapidly simulate scenarios for grid planning and reliable operations. With the goal of building a model that can simulate 1 billion scenarios in 24 hours, the collective work aims to accelerate grid expansion planning with flexibility and affordability, as well as improve reliability and efficiency in grid operations.
This project, known as Foundation Models for the Electric Grid: From Proof of Concept to Real-world Impacts (GridFM 2.0), is a three-year, $14.2 million project through the Genesis Mission Phase II program. GE Vernova brings experience in building AI for grid applications and will contribute to developing novel finetuning methods, practical use case definition, and validation with our distribution grid customers. Specifically, to support this project, GE Vernova Advanced Research will complete the following:
- Develop novel methods for fine-tuning and adapting grid foundation models for evolving utility-specific distribution networks.
- Deploy secure, behind-the-firewall models within on-premises environments.
- Collaborate with Alabama Power Company to define critical distribution use cases.
- Integrate GridFM into GridVISTA workflows to enhance scenario screening and decision support in day-ahead and real-time operations.
- Implement a testbed using GE Vernova’s Distribution Operator Training Simulator (DOTS).
- Validation in a staging environment, starting with offline backcasting and moving to a secure-network parallel evaluation.
