When the bell rings at the New York Stock Exchange on April 2 to celebrate the launch of GE Aerospace and GE Vernova as standalone public companies, a fitting artifact will be on display in the building: the Universal Stock Ticker, patented in 1873 by GE’s founder, Thomas Edison.

With GE Vernova standing at the threshold of becoming a new purpose-built, energy-focused company in a few short weeks, it’s worth noting the inspiration for its name. It is, says the company, “a combination of ver, derived from verde and verdant to signal the greens and blues of the Earth, and nova, from the Latin novus, or ‘new.’” Novus also happens to be one of the roots of the word “innovation,” a pillar of GE from its founding. Innovation, then, is literally in the company’s DNA.

The world has faced myriad challenges in recent years, from challenges to energy security and extreme weather events impacting the grid to the COVID-19 pandemic and the macroeconomic turbulence it caused. These have helped to catapult sustainability to the top of the boardroom agenda, with companies now striving both to succeed as a business and in contributing to solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges at the same time.

As GE Vernova prepares to stand up as a publicly traded company in April 2024, the company has laid out five central principles called the GE Vernova Way: “We drive Innovation in everything we do, serve our Customers with pride and focus, and operate with a Lean mindset, focusing on safety, quality, delivery, and cost, across our operations.

Breaking up is hard to do. For communities determined to quickly adopt wind and solar, however, wriggling free from old coal-power providers is often the first step. That’s exactly what’s happened recently in Colorado, as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) last year granted electricity cooperative United Power’s wish to separate from Tri-State, a legacy generator.

This afternoon, the GE Board of Directors formally approved the spin-off of GE Vernova, now slated for April 2. This date will also mark the launch of GE Aerospace, completing our transformation into three independent and investment-grade industry leaders.

You might not think a purring power grid and a fountain of French fizz have much in common, but Thorsten Heller, the chief innovation officer at GE Vernova’s Grid Software business, begs to differ. He compares an efficient network for electricity delivery to the champagne towers popular at weddings, where the sparkling wine overflowing from the coupe at the summit trickles down evenly into tiers of glasses below, without ever spilling a drop.

Less than a year ago, GE Reports brought you the story of some of the people working to build the Tallawarra B power station, north of Sydney, Australia. This week, EnergyAustralia announced the opening of Tallawarra B, which is the first dual-fuel gas-and-hydrogen power plant in Australia. It will add as much as 320 megawatts (MW) to the grid, enough to power the equivalent of about 150,000 Australian homes.
