GE Vernova now has nearly six months under its belt as a standalone purpose-built energy technology company. Nimbler and with a new stock listing and management team, the Cambridge, Massachusetts–based company is only getting started, unfurling its sails and setting a course all its own.

All around the globe, aging power grids are stretched to the limit, and growing demand for electrification is expected to add even more strain. This means that maximizing every electron of energy generated is essential to meet demand. One emerging concept that can help us realize the efficiencies we need is the virtual power plant.

Today, GE Vernova released its second quarter 2024 earnings results. We delivered strong results in the second quarter with margin expansion across all segments, and substantial cash flow improvement, both sequentially and year-over-year. We also raised our full-year 2024 guidance for revenue, adjusted EBITDA margin* and free cash flow* (FCF).

Teaching a group of young girls to extract DNA from fruit — over videoconference, due to the pandemic — wasn’t in Miguel Angel Herranz del Pino’s job description. But the field operation process manager at GE Vernova in Madrid, Spain, stepped in two years ago when a co-worker was unable to take the class during the site’s first-ever STEAM Girls Spain Summer Camp. This year, Herranz del Pino was a camp counselor again, this time in person. If wrangling 10-year-old girls was challenging over Zoom, doing it live was even harder — but far more rewarding.

Bernard Dagher, who heads up growth and strategy for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) at GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business, often reminds people why there are almost no landlines in Africa. As the story goes, cell phones arrived on the vast continent before it had strung up the thousands of miles of telephone wires needed for landlines.

What does the name Pluto conjure? Fearsome god of the underworld or happy cartoon dog? For engineers at GE Vernova Advanced Research, it seems to be a little of both: They’ve bestowed the famous name on a self-crawling, money-saving, epoxy-spraying robot that is designed to descend into and enter aging pipelines and cheerfully repair them from the inside. Just a bit bigger than a Yorkshire terrier, PLUTO is soon expected to start scratching away at one of the world’s most intractable emissions challenges: methane leakage.

Like most teenagers, Veronica Barner used to act out. Growing up in Bolivia in the late 1990s with two chemical engineers for parents, she would tell her friends that she was going to be a doctor, not an engineer. “That was my rebellious phase,” says Barner, who eventually realized her true calling and is now the head of research and development for Renewable Energy at GE Vernova.
