Leveraging AI to Manufacture High-Performance Magnets

July 2026 – GE Vernova Advanced Research will lend its expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning (AI/ML), and advanced manufacturing methods as a collaborator with Ames National Laboratory in a newly funded project led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

Referred to as the AI-Guided Manufacturing of High-Performance Heavy Rare-Earth-Free Magnets for Critical Materials Security (AIM-MAG) project, the collective team will develop an AI-enabled framework to improve the design and manufacturing of neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) permanent magnets, which are essential to national security technologies, resilient domestic supply chains, advanced manufacturing, and critical energy systems. 

This nine-month project is among the first cohort of awards supported by the Genesis Mission, a national initiative harnessing AI to drive scientific innovation and accelerate breakthroughs in energy, discovery science, national security, and beyond. The Genesis RFA received tremendous response from the scientific community with more than 5,000 proposal submissions; just 278 were awarded. In addition to funding, Genesis Mission awardees gain access to the Genesis Mission Platform, including AI agent frameworks, advanced AI models and software provided by industry collaborators, and high-performance computing (HPC) resources across DOE’s National Laboratories and partner facilities.

“GE Vernova Advanced Research has deep expertise in agentic AI development for materials science and advanced data-driven materials discovery, which will play a key role in the development of an integrated AI-guided knowledge base and closed-loop workflow for processing-microstructure-property optimization in rare-earth-free magnets,” said Principal Scientist Jinbo Cao, who also serves as the project lead for GE Vernova. “We’re look forward to working with RPI and Ames Lab to accelerate domestic magnet manufacturing without the use of heavy rare earth elements in a way that also promotes supply chain resilience.”
