Leveraging AI to Reduce Nuclear Reactor Deployment Times and Operating Costs

A collaboration between: Idaho National Laboratory (prime) and 32 industry, academia, and government institutions, including GE Vernova Advanced Research and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy
 

July 2026 – GE Vernova Advanced Research and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy will collaborate with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and 30 other entities to create an AI platform to accelerate nuclear power plant design, licensing, manufacturing, and operations. Known as Prometheus, the project aims to cut reactor deployment timelines and operating costs in half by improving every stage of the reactor lifecycle. 

GE Vernova is among the industry participants that will benchmark the agentic AI frameworks that implement high-fidelity modelling and simulation fine-tuning with data sets specific to industry products. These contributions are key to streamlining platform creation and deployment which enable autonomous operations. 

This project is supported by the Genesis Mission, a national initiative harnessing AI to drive scientific innovation and accelerate breakthroughs in energy, discovery science, national security, and beyond. The Genesis RFA received tremendous response from the scientific community with more than 5,000 proposal submissions; the Prometheus project is the largest single investment among the 278 projects awarded.

By integrating AI surrogates and RAG-based validation, we are unlocking a new paradigm of speed and precision that will significantly shorten the path to market for advanced reactor technologies,” said Dr. Faith Beck, who serves as the project’s co-leader for GE Vernova Advanced Research. “Once complete, Prometheus is positioned to fundamentally transform how we develop, deploy, and operate nuclear energy in this country.”
