Taiwan, like many entities around the world, has set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. To get there, it aims to reach a 25% share of renewables in its power mix by 2025, up from only 5.4% in 2021. This jump means Taiwan also needs to find a way to deal with the periodic pauses that come with wind and solar power. The wind can stop blowing and the sun can set or hide behind clouds just as demand for power grows.

Fresh out of a master’s program at Cornell University, Emma Renner is working these days on wind turbine engineering at GE Research in Niskayuna, New York. But you can forgive her if her mind occasionally wanders off into a different topic: dominoes. Renner, 24, is part of a team that is competing in a new Fox show called “Domino Masters,” in which domino artists from around the country compete to create the most impressive topple in the time allowed. (For the uninitiated, “topple” is domino-speak for when they all fall down.)

As developing nations around the world work to balance their growing populations and electricity demands with decarbonization goals, Malaysia, a rapidly emerging economy with 33 million people, is providing a case study in transitioning from coal to natural gas, a fossil fuel with a significantly smaller carbon footprint than coal.

Hillsborough County on Florida’s Gulf Coast is a perfect example for understanding how Florida became one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S. Encompassing the Tampa Bay metro area, it grew from a population of less than 1 million in 2000 to close to 1.5 million in 2020. And over the next 30 years, the county is projected to be the nation’s third-largest gainer in terms of population, with 600,000 more new residents coming. One thing they’ll surely need when they settle down is electricity.

Uniper, one of the world’s largest energy producers, announced in 2020 it planned to become carbon neutral by 2035. The company has already cooperated with GE Gas Power to improve the efficiency of its Enfield power plant, north of London. Now the two companies will be working together to help lower carbon emissions at Uniper’s newest combined-cycle power plant in the U.K.

It’s well accepted that natural gas power plants are an important part of the energy transition in support of more renewables being added to the grid. They can reliably generate hundreds of megawatts of baseload electricity with a relatively low carbon intensity and quickly adjust their output to match changes in demand and in supply from weather-dependent renewable sources like wind and solar farms.

The northern Appalachian region, covering Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, has helped America tap its energy reservoir over the past 150 years, supplying the country with its first oil and coal. Now the area’s industry is seeking to pivot, lead the country to a lower-carbon future and create new jobs along the way.

The 1980s are back in fashion, according to Harper’s Bazaar, but in some corners of industry, they never left. “Nobody’s wearing big hair and shoulder pads, but it’s all very pencil and paper,” says Jeremiah Smedra, an operations director at FieldCore, GE’s field services company. Smedra is talking about maintenance workers trudging into power plants with thick binders filled with drawings and instructions to make sure outages are performed according to plan.

When GE released its Sustainability Report last June, it made a commitment to becoming carbon neutral in its own operations by 2030, and announced an ambition to be net zero by 2050, including Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products. GE’s technology and its long innovation tradition are already helping customers find new ways to deal with looming challenges like the energy transition to address climate change.
