6 min read
  • Three GE Vernova 7HA.03 and two 7HA.02 gas turbines are expected to be installed at Qurayyah Independent Power Plant (QIPP)

  • QIPP can potentially be configured with post-combustion carbon capture systems

  • Project supports Saudi Arabia’s commitment to increase gas power generation in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA (May 28, 2025): GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) today announced it has secured an order for five 7H-Class gas turbines - three 7HA.03 and two 7HA.02 units from Técnicas Reunidas and Orascom Construction (TR & ORASCOM CONSTRUCTION). The two companies have signed, under a 50-50 joint venture, the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for Qurayyah Independent Power Plant (IPP) Expansion Project in the Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia).

This expansion project, a 3 gigawatt (GW) combined cycle gas-fired power plant with readiness to build a carbon capture unit, aims to bolster electricity production capacity and enhance operational efficiency in Saudi Arabia. Expanding Saudi Arabia’s fleet of combined cycle power plants plays a crucial role in Saudi Arabia’s plan to generate half of its electricity from gas by 2030 and half from renewables, paving the way to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2060.

Hajr Two Electricity Co., a company owned by ACWA Power, the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), and Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co. Ltd signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the Qurayyah Independent Power Plant (IPP) Expansion Project with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC – Principal Buyer) in February 2025.

Hajr Two Electricity Co. commented: “The QIPP Expansion Project is a very ambitious project and we are proud to support its development. We look forward to working with TR & ORASCOM CONSTRUCTION and GE Vernova to contribute to Saudi Arabia’s enhancement of its electricity supply as the Kingdom transitions its power generation mix to incorporate more renewable energy in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 and its ambitious sustainability targets.”

“QIPP project is evidence of Saudi Arabia’s strong belief in the future of gas as it emits less CO2 and other pollutants than oil-fueled power plants” said Joseph Anis, President & CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East & Africa. “We have developed a productive and successful relationship with TR & ORASCOM CONSTRUCTION building on our proven expertise in natural gas combined cycle plant engineering, operability, and plant integration, and we are delighted to deploy some of our most advanced power generation technologies, with the potential to integrate carbon capture solutions to help significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in QIPP’s and other gas power plants in Saudi Arabia.”

GE Vernova has been playing a pivotal role in fostering the evolution of the Kingdom’s energy infrastructure for almost 90 years, supporting economic diversification, localization, high value exports, and talent development efforts and still does so today in support of Saudi Vision 2030.

The company currently employs approximately 850 people in Saudi Arabia. GE Vernova’s investments in the Kingdom include the Khobar Integration Facility (KIF) for grid solutions, as well as the GE Manufacturing and Technology Center (GEMTEC) campus in Dammam, which encompasses a Services and Repairs Center for gas turbines, the GE Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT) facility for the manufacturing of gas turbines, components and accessory modules, the GE MENA Decarbonization Center of Excellence, and a Monitoring & Diagnostics Center for the remote monitoring of power generation assets.

  • Complex task requires skilled personnel with extensive training and practical experience, including special certifications and accreditation

  • Strategic collaboration supports Vision 2030 and local talent development

Riyadh, SAUDI ARABIA (March 24, 2025) - GE Vernova, Inc. (NYSE: GEV) and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) have announced the successful completion of the first gas turbine outage entirely planned and executed by GE Vernova’s Saudi engineers and specialists. This project at SEC's 8th power plant in Riyadh highlights both companies' commitment to fostering local talent and promoting localization within Saudi Arabia's energy sector, in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030.

This achievement comes just months after GE Vernova, in the presence of HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Minister of Energy, celebrated the successful rollout of the first H-class gas turbine unit completed at the GE Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT) facility in Dammam.

The 8th power plant in Riyadh is a strategic facility that plays a crucial role in addressing the growing electricity demands of the capital. It required meticulous planning and execution, demonstrating the culmination of a decade of comprehensive training, certifications, accreditations, practical experience, and professional development for Saudi talent.

Male and female Saudi engineers and specialists at the 8th power plant prioritized rigorous safety protocols and successfully completed the project on schedule, supported by GE Vernova’s Live Outage platform. This digital tool enhances field execution through standardized procedures, streamlined tasks and safety best practices.

GE Vernova’s power plant outage services team brings extensive experience in optimizing power plant performance through expert maintenance, repairs, and upgrades. This Saudi-led initiative marks a pivotal step in enhancing plant efficiency and the long-term reliability of power units.

Engineer Abdulaziz Saeed Al-Shumaila, Head of Power Generation Operations in the Central Region, Saudi Electricity Company, said, “We are committed to providing reliable and stable power supply for the Kingdom. GE Vernova’s Saudi-led outage at the 8th power plant marks a new era in the Saudi power sector, underscoring our commitment to driving innovation and developing local talent. Through our strategic collaboration with GE Vernova, we aim to empower more Saudi engineers and specialists to assume advanced leadership and technical roles within the Kingdom’s robust energy ecosystem. This collaboration will also contribute to local skills development initiatives, supporting the achievement of Vision 2030 goals.”

Hisham Al Bahkali, President of GE Vernova, Saudi Arabia, noted, “Our successful maintenance project at Riyadh’s 8th power plant showcases the Kingdom's local talent in driving a more sustainable energy future, directly supporting Vision 2030. This achievement demonstrates Saudi engineers' capabilities in managing complex energy projects. Our ongoing collaboration with SEC will further advance the Kingdom’s energy transformation and cultivate national competencies.”

He added, “This accomplishment caps a remarkable year for GE Vernova in Saudi Arabia, notably the rollout of the first H-Class gas turbine at the GESAT facility. This advanced turbine is set to power the Jafurah Cogeneration Independent Steam and Power Plant (ISPP), highlighting our commitment to supporting national strategies, including Vision 2030.”

In 2024, GE Vernova secured its largest-ever Middle East & Africa order for six 7HA.03 gas turbines, two 7E.03 units, and a 21-year maintenance agreement for Saudi Arabia's Taiba 1 and Qassim 1 power plants. The company also completed FEED studies exploring decarbonization options for three Saudi Arabian cogeneration plants, potentially reducing carbon emissions using pre- and post-combustion technologies.

GE Vernova acquires Dussur’s shares in General Electric Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT)

5 min read

(formerly a joint venture between Dussur and GE Vernova)

DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia (September 02, 2024) - The Saudi Arabian Industrial Investments Company (“Dussur”) successfully divested its 55% ownership stake in General Electric Saudi Advanced Turbines (“GESAT”) to GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV), bringing GE Vernova’s ownership to 100% in GESAT.

Since its establishment in 2017, GESAT has played an important role in meeting the Kingdom's demand for gas turbines, specifically through the localized completion of high-performance F-class and H-class gas turbines, and the manufacturing of post cast components and accessory modules.

GESAT is a successful joint venture that is supplying gas turbines and has manufactured more than 200 gas turbine modules to support power generation plants in up to 10 countries around the world, including Saudi Arabia.

In addition to GESAT’s above accomplishments, the company placed a great focus on transferring technological and industrial knowledge through trainings of Saudi cadres on gas turbine assembly and manufacturing processes. The trainings were completed at both GE Vernova’s Greenville site in the United States and the Belfort site in France.

“Dussur’s decision to sell its shares to GE Vernova follows achieving the investment and development objectives of this investment in GESAT, the company has been able to employ and train a number of young national talents; and transfer knowledge in the field of gas turbine  technology,” said Dr. Raed Alrayes, Chief Executive Officer at Dussur.

He also noted that, “Dussur’s investment policy is to enter partnerships that establish transformational industries that the Kingdom needs or support its supply chains. After ensuring the stability and maturity of these industrial capabilities, Dussur exits with the aim of renewing its investments into new industrial opportunities of greater value to the local economy. Today, we are proud of the industrial capabilities that distinguish GESAT and can further grow under the sole ownership of GE Vernova.”

Joseph Anis, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said, “GE Vernova has been honored to partner with Dussur on GESAT since 2017. We have a strong legacy of almost 90 years of contributions to the development of Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure, with up to 580 employees in the Kingdom today. We intend to continue supporting economic diversification, localization, high value exports, and talent development efforts in the country to further the Kingdom’s goals under Saudi Vision 2030. We also remain committed to collaborating with various stakeholders to help accelerate Saudi Arabia’s transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.”

GE Vernova spun-off from GE (NYSE: GE) and began trading as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on April 2, 2024. With approximately 55,000 wind turbines and 7,000 gas turbines, GE Vernova's technology base helps generate approximately 25% of the world's electricity and has a meaningful role to play in the energy transition in Saudi Arabia and around the globe.

GE Vernova secures milestone gas turbine and services order for Taiba 1 and Qassim 1 power plants in Saudi Arabia

10 min read
  • Order is GE Vernova’s single largest one to date for the 7HA.03 gas turbine in the Middle East and Africa, and includes six 7HA.03 units, as well as two 7E.03 gas turbines for the Taiba 1 and Qassim 1 power plants, supplemented by maintenance services to support the plants’ operations for the next 21 years

  • These facilities are expected to be among the most efficient power plants in the Kingdom and to deliver up to 3.8 gigawatts of electricity to the grid in total, supporting Saudi Arabia’s goals to transition to a lower-carbon future

  • GE Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT) will roll out four H-class gas turbines equipping the plants, making them the first 7HA.03 units to be completed locally in the Kingdom

Dammam, SAUDI ARABIA (June 24, 2024): GE Vernova, Inc. (“GE Vernova”) (NYSE: GEV) today announced it has secured an order for six 7HA.03 gas turbines and two 7E.03 gas turbines from the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd. (SEPCOIII), for two new power plants: Taiba 1 located in the western region of Saudi Arabia, around 100 km southeast of Madinah city, and Qassim 1 located in the central region around 30 km southeast of Buraydah city. This equipment order was booked in March 2024 and reflected in the company’s first quarter earnings announcement. In addition to the equipment order, GE Vernova today also announced the signature of a 21-year service agreement to support plant operations with Riyadh-headquartered ACWA Power’s wholly owned subsidiary, National Operations & Maintenance Company (NOMAC).

The projects are aligned to Saudi Arabia’s goals to generate about half its electricity from renewable energy sources and half from gas by 2030, paving the way to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2060.

Taiba 1 and Qassim 1 plants, to be powered by GE Vernova’s most advanced gas turbines, are expected to deliver up to 3.8 gigawatts (GW) of electricity to the grid in total, a capacity equivalent to what would be needed to power the energy needs of approximately 1.2 million homes in Saudi Arabia. Expected to be completed in 2027, they are anticipated to be among the most efficient power plants in the Kingdom and can be configured with post-combustion carbon capture systems to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, 7HA.03 gas turbines currently have the capability to burn up to 50% by volume of hydrogen when blended with natural gas.

“The development of Taiba 1 and Qassim 1 plants is a very ambitious project, and we are proud to support it,” said a spokesperson of SEPCOIII. “We are also excited to work with GE Vernova to evaluate how carbon capture solutions could potentially be integrated with these gas power plants to help lower emissions. We expect to see increased longer term demand for gas plants integrated with carbon capture technologies, which is key to reducing emissions from fossil fuels and helping fight climate change.”

GE Vernova has contributed to the development of the Kingdom’s energy infrastructure for almost 90 years, supporting economic diversification, localization, high value exports, and talent development efforts and still does so today in support of Saudi Vision 2030. Today, the company employs approximately 580 people in Saudi Arabia. GE Vernova’s investments in the Kingdom include the GE Manufacturing and Technology Center (GEMTEC) campus in Dammam, which encompasses a Service and Repairs Center for gas turbines, the GE MENA Decarbonization Center of Excellence, a Monitoring & Diagnostics Center for the remote monitoring of power generation assets, as well as GE Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT), a joint investment with Dussur for gas turbines and components in Saudi Arabia. Four of the H-class gas turbines equipping the plants are planned to be rolled out from GESAT, making them the first 7HA.03 units to be completed locally in the Kingdom.

“This project, which marks our largest single order for 7HA.03 gas turbines to date in the region, is expected to open up a new chapter for gas power generation in Saudi Arabia,” said Joseph Anis, President & CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East & Africa. “As an innovation leader in the path towards decarbonization, we are proud of developing our first 7HA.03 project at GESAT and boosting the localization of the gas turbines industry in Saudi Arabia, in alignment with the Kingdom’s goals for more diversified and sustainable economic growth. We are delighted to team with SEPCOIII and ACWA Power’s NOMAC to deploy our most advanced power generation technologies, services, and proven expertise in natural gas combined cycle plant engineering, operability, and plant integration, to support the transition to a lower-carbon energy future.”

Under the 21-year service contract signed with NOMAC, GE Vernova plans to deliver maintenance and repairs, supply of parts. In addition, GE Vernova’s Monitoring & Diagnostics Center is expected to oversee the real-time operating conditions and provide remote diagnostics tools using digital analytics technology.

“We have developed a productive and successful role-model relationship with GE Vernova that will enable our collective organizations to deliver meaningful innovation and energy contributions to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” said Marco Arcelli, ACWA Power CEO. “With today’s signing of this contract, we mark not only a milestone in our cooperation but pave the way to future collaborations for the safer, more reliable, and more sustainable production of electricity in the Kingdom.”

GE Vernova spun-off from GE (NYSE: GE) and began trading as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on April 2, 2024. With approximately 55,000 wind turbines and 7,000 gas turbines, GE Vernova's technology base helps generate about 25% of the world's electricity and has a meaningful role to play in the energy transition in Saudi Arabia and around the globe.
