GE Vernova-led, DOE-funded engineering study highlights how EGR technology can reduce costs of carbon capture at a gas-fired power station

13 min read
  • Utilizing an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system within a carbon capture system can lead to more than 6% savings

  • The DOE-funded study evaluated integrating the James M. Barry Unit 6 natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) power plant with Linde’s Gen 2 carbon capture solution based on BASF’s OASE® blue gas treatment technology

  • Study shows significant potential benefits of capturing 95% of carbon dioxide (CO2) through the use of EGR, while additional gas turbine upgrades could maintain the power plant’s existing output

ATLANTA, GA (October 15, 2024) - GE Vernova Inc (NYSE: GEV) today announced the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management released the official findings of the GE Vernova-led front-end engineering design (FEED) study, “Retrofittable Advanced Combined-Cycle Integration for Flexible Decarbonized Generation.”

The study evaluated retrofitting Southern Company subsidiary Alabama Power’s James M. Barry Electric Generating Plant, located in Bucks, Alabama, with technology capable of capturing up to 95% of the plant’s CO2 emissions. It demonstrated that the integration of GE Vernova’s Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system could lead to a reduction of more than 6% of the total cost of the carbon capture facility, as compared to installing carbon capture without the EGR system.

The GE Vernova-led study was completed in collaboration with Southern Company, Linde, BASF, and Kiewit, and explored the benefits of close integration between a natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) plant and a carbon capture system.

GE Vernova’s measures and technologies explored in the study included the use of NGCC steam in the carbon capture system facility, potential gas turbine upgrades, installing NGCC and carbon capture control systems, and employing GE Vernova’s EGR system, which reintroduces part of the exhaust gas back into the gas turbine inlet.

The study’s integrated approach helped reduce the size and costs of the carbon capture system by halving the number of absorber towers, improving the efficiency and flexibility of the plant, and potentially increasing its power output.

“GE Vernova is grateful for the Department of Energy’s support of this study, the first of its kind to explore EGR technology applied in a gas power carbon capture plant” said Jeremee Wetherby, GE Vernova Carbon Solutions Leader. “We developed a holistic approach considering various integration measures building on our long history and expertise in power plant engineering, operation, upgrades and controls. Carbon capture is a crucial pathway to lowering carbon emissions from power generation to near-zero levels, and we are pleased with the benefits projected by the study – which naturally can vary from site to site but represent a valuable indicator of the possibilities at similar sites.”

The study demonstrated that the effects of adding a carbon capture system to an NGCC power plant could be reduced through a series of integration measures, including the EGR system. GE Vernova has developed EGR systems for two decades, initially for nitrogen oxide (NOx) control and part-load efficiency benefits. In addition to this study, GE Vernova has demonstrated the commercial readiness of F- and H-class combustors operating with EGR at GE Vernova’s test facility in Greenville, South Carolina.

This study recognized the potential of an EGR system to deliver the following benefits as compared to a non-EGR system:

  • Large reduction of carbon capture facility footprint and cost of absorber
  • Lower operating costs due to reduced amine degradation
  • Less energy-intensive separation due to higher concentration of CO2 in flue gas directed to the carbon capture system
  • More steam turbine power output because of lower steam consumption

The collaboration with Southern Company, Linde, BASF, and Kiewit was crucial for the success of this study, which showed that GE Vernova’s integration techniques can help reduce plant capital costs, energy consumption, and operating expenses.

“Southern Company is pleased this desktop engineering study showed that applying carbon capture for natural gas combined-cycle generation may create options and long-term value for customers in a net-zero future,” said Dr. Mark S. Berry, Southern Company Senior Vice President of Research, Environment And Sustainability. “We congratulate GE and the other members of the FEED study team for employing unique technology approaches that could advance the future deployment of carbon capture as a clean energy solution for the customer and communities we serve.”

"As a provider of CO2 capture technology, we commend DOE's leadership in advancing gas power decarbonization technology towards a clean and reliable energy future. The results of this FEED study underpin Linde’s belief that a collaborative approach between technology providers, end-users, and other stakeholders is essential in driving innovation and cost reduction in CO2 capture. We are committed to working with DOE and other partners to help decarbonize industry,” said Dominic Cianchetti, Senior Vice President, Region Americas, Linde.

“Kiewit Engineering Group’s participation in the GE Vernova-led study underscores our dedication to advancing innovative solutions for carbon capture technology. By leveraging our engineering and construction expertise, we contributed to the integration of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, achieving significant cost reductions and efficiency improvements. This study highlights the potential for retrofitting existing power plants to meet stringent carbon emission standards, a vital step towards sustainable energy,” Kevin Needham, President-Power Engineering, Kiewit Engineering Group Inc.

With the goals of improving affordability, reliability, load flexibility, and significantly reducing carbon emissions, GE Vernova’s NGCC and carbon capture integration techniques can be applied across more than 1,600 F-Class gas turbines worldwide, delivering approximately 300 gigawatts (GW) of electricity daily.

  • FACTSFLEX GFMe combines STATCOM technology with supercapacitor energy storage and improves grid reliability and stability in voltage- and frequency disturbances by providing virtual inertia and grid forming controls especially in areas with weaker infrastructure or high renewable energy.

  • Available globally, FACTSFLEX GFMe aims to support the global transition to cleaner energy with stable and efficient grid operations.

Paris, France (Aug 28, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE:GEV) today announced the launch of its latest innovation, FACTSFLEX GFMe, an advanced Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) solution aimed at strengthening power grids and facilitating the increased use of renewable energy sources.

FACTSFLEX GFMe combines GE Vernova’s STATCOM technology with advanced supercapacitors to stabilize the grid more effectively by enabling active power via energy storage. This combination allows rapid response to grid disturbances on the grid, which is especially important in areas with weaker infrastructure or high levels of renewable energy. By improving grid stability, FACTSFLEX GFMe supports the reliable operation of power systems and helps drive the global shift toward cleaner energy. The solution is now available globally.

“Our grid is undergoing its most significant transformation in over a century, driven by the rise of renewable energy sources like solar and wind,” said Johan Bindele, Leader of Grid Systems Integration business at GE Vernova. “This transformation brings new challenges, particularly the intermittent nature of renewables, which can lead to voltage fluctuations and grid instability. With FACTSFLEX GFMe, we are introducing a solution that leverages supercapacitor technology alongside our STATCOM systems to re-create the inertia which is being lost through the retirement of traditional thermal power generation, ensuring stable and reliable grid operations as we transition to a cleaner energy future.”

How FACTSFLEX GFMe works?

Beyond its reactive power compensation capabilities, FACTSFLEX GFMe employs supercapacitor-based energy storage to emulate inertia by injecting or absorbing active power. This allows grid operators more advanced options to automatically and instantly support the stability of the grid. The system is based on a double star configuration, enabling high voltage energy storage integration. This modular and scalable solution is adaptable to meet the varied needs of different projects.

FACTSFLEX GFMe offers superior voltage and active power performance compared to battery-based options. Active power is scalable, with a typical rating of 150 MW for several seconds. Reactive power capabilities can be tailored to customer requirements, with continuous ratings of typically around 300 Mvar.

In addition to FACTSFLEX GFMe, GE Vernova’s STATCOM portfolio, recently rebranded FACTSFLEX STATCOM, also includes

FACTSFLEX Classic, GE Vernova’s original STATCOM solution with an extensive and proven install base

and FACTSFLEX GFM, a grid-forming STATCOM that provides instantaneous natural reactive power injection for grid disturbances for advanced grid stability.

GE Vernova to collaborate with Duke Energy on nation’s first 100% green hydrogen-fueled peaking power plant

7 min read
  • Duke Energy’s DeBary plant is expected to become among the first commercially operational power plants to produce, store, and use green hydrogen for peaking power applications
  • GE Vernova will support the full-scale integration of the gas turbine with green hydrogen including the upgrade of the existing GE 7E gas turbine installed onsite

Volusia, Florida - November 7, 2023 - GE Vernova’s Gas Power business (NYSE: GE) today announced that it will support the development of an end-to-end green hydrogen system that Duke Energy plans to build and operate at its DeBary plant, located in Volusia County, Florida near Orlando. When operational in 2024, the new hydrogen system will provide peak power to Duke’s customers at times of increased electricity demand.

The plant will be the first in the nation and among the world’s first power plants to produce and use green hydrogen to power a gas turbine for peaking power applications, when the grid requires additional electrical generation to meet demand. The production, storage, and end-use will be co-located at the DeBary power plant.

GE Vernova will support the integration of the turbine with green hydrogen, including the upgrade on one of the four GE 7E gas turbines installed at the site to accommodate hydrogen fuel blends of significant volumes. This will be the first commercial operation of this ability.

The DeBary Hydrogen Project will leverage Duke Energy’s installed solar array to operate electrolyzers to create green hydrogen, which will be stored on-site. Then, the green hydrogen will be used to power the gas turbine with up to 100% hydrogen fuel to support periods of peak demand for electricity.

“This first-ever, commercial operation of a gas turbine on 100% hydrogen will be a groundbreaking achievement for Duke Energy and for our industry. Our existing solar field and gas turbines at DeBary provide a unique opportunity for us to produce green hydrogen, store it onsite and then combust it to ensure reliable service when electricity demand is high,” said Regis Repko, Duke Energy’s senior vice president of generation and transmission strategy. “This combination of technologies will allow gas turbines to become decarbonized, dispatchable assets that support the addition of more renewables to our grid, and we appreciate the opportunity to collaborate on such an innovative project with GE Vernova and others.”

Demand for energy in the United States and globally is increasing rapidly, making it even more challenging to rely solely on intermittent, renewable energy to keep the power grid operational when the wind is not blowing, or the sun is not shining. However, hydrogen produced from excess renewable energy during optimal generation conditions and stored for later use by gas turbines can provide a unique mechanism to help ensure reliable, affordable, and more sustainable electricity generation.

“GE Vernova is thrilled to work closely with Duke Energy on this project, which is a perfect example of the interplay opportunities between renewable energy and efficient gas-fired combustion technologies and exhibits how gas turbines are an essential technology in the energy transition,” said Eric Gray, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business. “Multiple engineering and consulting teams located across GE’s sites worldwide will support the DeBary Hydrogen Project, perform any needed modifications to the gas turbine and work with Duke Energy to support the overall integration of the hydrogen fuels. We are honored to work with Duke Energy in this first-of-its-kind project.”

To support the project, GE began working with Duke Energy on a hydrogen plant readiness assessment in 2021. Following the installation of the electrolyzer equipment and hydrogen storage capacity on site, GE Vernova will execute modifications to the existing gas turbine infrastructure at the DeBary plant, including the fuel handling systems, valves and piping compatible with higher blends of hydrogen operation and up to 100% hydrogen (by volume). GE Vernova will also install the fuel skid with hydrogen blending, finalize control modifications, and support the overall integration of the project to support 100% hydrogen operation expected in 2024.

When fully operational, the converted 83 megawatt (MW) 7E gas turbine will have the ability to operate on natural gas, liquid fuel, 100% hydrogen, or a blend of natural gas and hydrogen providing the site with complete fuel and operating flexibility while maintaining plant reliability.

Located just north of Orlando, the Duke Energy Florida DeBary plant consists of a 74.5 MW solar power plant spread across an area covering the equivalent of almost 200 football fields and a 692 MW gas power plant for reliable reserve power. The power plant is powered by six of GE’s 7B gas turbines and four of GE’s 7E gas turbines.
