  • GE Vernova secures a major order to supply grid equipment and solutions through GEAT for Sonelgaz projects.

  • The order includes supplying advanced grid solutions for 134 substations by 2028 to enhance Algeria’s grid infrastructure.

Algiers, Algeria (July 17, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced that it has secured a major order from Sonelgaz through their joint venture, GE Algeria Turbines (GEAT), to enhance Algeria’s grid infrastructure. The order, which was booked in the second quarter of 2024, involves GE Vernova supplying GEAT with high voltage (HV) equipment, components, and grid automation solutions for 134 substations by 2028. GEAT will integrate this equipment at its Ain Yagout facility in Batna, Algeria for Sonelgaz projects.

The contract follows the agreement signed between Sonelgaz and GE Vernova earlier this year to diversify GEAT's core business towards manufacturing of high and extra-high voltage substations and marks a substantial step forward in the collaboration between GE Vernova, Sonelgaz, and GEAT. The supplied equipment is expected to play a pivotal role in integrating renewable energy sources and ensuring a reliable power supply for Algeria's growing population and economy.

Mourad Adjal, CEO of Sonelgaz Group said: “This order is the result of the expansion of existing capabilities between Sonelgaz and GE Vernova, through the recent amendment of their joint venture to enable the deployment of grid solutions in addition to the production of high and extra-high voltage substation equipment to implement Algeria’s electricity transmission network development plan. It also represents the culmination of Sonelgaz’s efforts to support the national integration program by producing high quality and advanced technology equipment for the first time in Algeria and Africa, ensuring the transfer of expertise in this field to Algeria.”

Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification Systems businesses, commented, "Securing this major order is a testament to our commitment to advancing Algeria's energy infrastructure. We are excited to deliver our advanced grid solutions that will enhance grid efficiency and support Algeria's energy transition. This order reinforces our dedication to fostering local talent and creating job opportunities in the region.”

GE Vernova spun-off from General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) and began trading as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on April 2, 2024. In addition to the GEAT joint venture with Sonelgaz, the company has a strong legacy of contributions to the development of Algeria’s energy sector, providing power generation, transmission, and distribution solutions, as well as software applications, and employs over 300 people in the country.

8 min read
  • GE Vernova to supply its advanced FLEXINVERTERTM solar power station technology, as well as design and engineering services, to Kalyon Güneş Teknolojileri Üretim A.Ş.’s (Kalyon PV) solar project in Viranşehir

  • GE Vernova's deployment of its FLEXINVERTERTM technology is set to achieve a combined solar power capacity of 2.5 GWp/1.9 GWe across commissioned and ongoing projects in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (May 28, 2024) - GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced it has signed a contract with Kalyon PV to supply its FLEXINVERTERTM solar power station, as well as design and engineering services, to Kalyon PV in Viranşehir, Turkey. Inogen, GE Vernova’s regional solutions provider, will be in charge of the construction and installation of the solar power station.

GE Vernova’s solar power station is expected to power Kalyon Enerji’s 157 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaics (PV) factory, making Kalyon Enerji one of the first companies in Turkey to produce solar panels using 100% renewable electricity when commissioned.

“We are proud to be a driving force behind Turkey’s transition to clean energy. By investing in solar panel manufacturing and providing these solar panels to large-scale solar power plants, we’re not only providing sustainable energy solutions, but also creating jobs and contributing to Turkey's energy independence,” said Dr. Murtaza Ata, Board Member of Kalyon PV.

"After having executed several Renewable Energy Resources Zones (YEKA) projects in Turkey, we are now focusing on industries that want to produce captive power at a utility scale for their self-consumption through PV projects, such as Kalyon PV’s solar power plant in Viranşehir, and renewable hybrid projects, including large scale storage. We offer a comprehensive financing to support our customers, which includes support from export credit agencies. This financing package enables us to provide competitive financing options to facilitate and scale up the adoption of renewable energy technologies in the energy sector," said Megi Gabriyel, Region Leader Solar & Storage Solutions, Middle East, Africa & Turkey at GE Vernova.

With 2.5 GWp/1.9 GWe of combined solar power capacity in Turkey, including commissioned and ongoing projects, GE Vernova’s FLEXINVERTERTM technology is playing a pivotal role in the development of Turkey’s solar industry.

“Thanks to our strategic relationship with GE Vernova, we ensure seamless coordination of supply chain and field activities, addressing key challenges in project execution. Our professional teams, comprising more than one thousand employees, will provide continuous support, enabling swift intervention during both the installation and operation phases of the Viranşehir power plant,” said Ali Murat SOYDAN, Assoc. Prof. Dr., Chairman Inogen Group.

This collaboration builds upon an existing relationship, leveraging the success of Kalyon Enerji’s 1,347 MWp/1,000 MWe Karapinar solar power plant in the Konya Karapinar province, which deployed GE Vernova's FLEXINVERTERTM solar technology. Commissioned in 2023, the Karapinar facility is Turkey’s largest single source of solar power to date. The project was part of the first Turkish solar YEKA GES tender launched in 2017 by the Turkish Ministry of Energy under the Renewable Energy Resources Zones (YEKA) program that streamlines the development of large-scale solar and wind farms.

Turkey's rapid expansion of its renewable energy sector, driven by a growing electricity demand and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions, positions solar power as a key driver of this growth. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Turkey aims to commission an impressive 10 GW of solar capacity between 2017 and 2027, with projections indicating a surge of approximately 500% to 52.9 GW by 2035. 1

Additionally, GE Vernova is uniquely positioned to deploy its Battery Energy Storage Solution FLEXRESERVOIRTM coupled with financing to support Turkey’s next phase of renewable energy projects with storage.

GE Vernova debuts AI-powered carbon emissions management software at power plant in Cote D’Ivoire

7 min read
  • GE Vernova’s carbon emissions management software, CERius™, will be deployed at Azito’s largest power plant in the Ivory Coast to boost accuracy of reporting.

  • The software will harness the power of AI to empower the energy industry to meet their net-zero goals and serve as an example on how to measure, manage, and operationalize insights to help reduce carbon emissions.

Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire: March 26, 2024 – Today, GE Vernova announced that Globeleq’s Azito Energie S.A. (“Azito”), the largest gas power plant in Cote D’Ivoire, will be the first power plant to debut and deploy its carbon emissions management software, CERius™, which is designed to help energy companies progress toward their net-zero goals using data precision and abatement planning capabilities. This announcement comes on the heels of more global regulations around emissions reporting, including the recent rules passed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which seeks to require companies to report emissions for the first time.

CERius™ will use the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to enable organizations to more accurately measure, manage, and operationalize certain insights needed to help companies track their carbon neutral emissions goals. CERius™ is engineered to automate more accurate greenhouse gas (GHG) data collection and suggest recommendations to operationalize carbon reduction efforts by offering scenario analysis, team collaboration, and standardized reporting based on GHG protocols.

One of the most effective ways to drive emissions reduction in the energy sector is to pursue digital transformation,” said, Linda Rae, General Manager, Power Generation & Oil and Gas, Electrification Software, GE Vernova. “While many energy industrials have been reporting emissions for years, the process is labor intensive, slow to surface insights, and based upon generic formulas. The energy transition demands agility, speed, and accuracy of data collection – CERius™ offers the fidelity of reporting emissions down to a specific asset, which can unleash actionable insights to help improve scope 1, 2, and 3 data accuracy and reporting, in addition to measuring abatement planning strategies,” added Rae.

Azito is a trailblazer in the digital energy space in Africa, serving as an example to other energy producers on the benefits of using digital solutions. By deploying CERius™, Azito will be not just the first company in Africa, but in the world, to access this technology and be able to better manage their emissions data, compliance reporting, and strategic planning, further contributing to their net-zero goals. Implementing cross-functional standards and processes fueled by CERius™ will help position companies to address ever-evolving regulatory compliance. “As we see the rise of environmental reporting across the energy supply chain by regulators, stakeholders, and investors, software will be a game-changer for power utilities, if applied at speed and to scale,” added Rae.

With greater access to emissions data, Azito will be able to make more informed decisions on how to reduce their carbon emissions. Azito already uses GE Vernova’s award winning Asset Performance Management (APM)[1] software’s APM Reliability Plus module, which uses advanced algorithms, AI, and ML to help predict potential failures in the power plants several weeks/days before they occur. Hence, allowing proper planning with the goal to reduce downtime which automatically translates to more productive hours and higher revenues.

Gionata Visconti, Chief Operating Officer of Globeleq, said: “As a Group that has a mixed portfolio of power plants across Africa and is fully committed to the energy transition, it is vital that we are able to monitor and report our emissions from one of our key thermal plants in a timely and accurate manner. At the same time, we can use the information from CERius™ to reduce and abate our emissions. Critically, Azito is an essential part of Cote d’Ivoire’s energy infrastructure, and we will now be able to make important planning decisions with better and more insightful data.”

The Azito power plant generates electricity using natural gas from the country’s offshore gas fields. Located in the village of Azito in the district of Yopougon, approximately 6 km west of Abidjan, the facility uses combined cycle gas turbines that generate 713 MW of electricity. This equates to approximately 30% of the country’s base load generation.
