GE Vernova acquires Dussur’s shares in General Electric Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT)

5 min read

(formerly a joint venture between Dussur and GE Vernova)

DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia (September 02, 2024) - The Saudi Arabian Industrial Investments Company (“Dussur”) successfully divested its 55% ownership stake in General Electric Saudi Advanced Turbines (“GESAT”) to GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV), bringing GE Vernova’s ownership to 100% in GESAT.

Since its establishment in 2017, GESAT has played an important role in meeting the Kingdom's demand for gas turbines, specifically through the localized completion of high-performance F-class and H-class gas turbines, and the manufacturing of post cast components and accessory modules.

GESAT is a successful joint venture that is supplying gas turbines and has manufactured more than 200 gas turbine modules to support power generation plants in up to 10 countries around the world, including Saudi Arabia.

In addition to GESAT’s above accomplishments, the company placed a great focus on transferring technological and industrial knowledge through trainings of Saudi cadres on gas turbine assembly and manufacturing processes. The trainings were completed at both GE Vernova’s Greenville site in the United States and the Belfort site in France.

“Dussur’s decision to sell its shares to GE Vernova follows achieving the investment and development objectives of this investment in GESAT, the company has been able to employ and train a number of young national talents; and transfer knowledge in the field of gas turbine  technology,” said Dr. Raed Alrayes, Chief Executive Officer at Dussur.

He also noted that, “Dussur’s investment policy is to enter partnerships that establish transformational industries that the Kingdom needs or support its supply chains. After ensuring the stability and maturity of these industrial capabilities, Dussur exits with the aim of renewing its investments into new industrial opportunities of greater value to the local economy. Today, we are proud of the industrial capabilities that distinguish GESAT and can further grow under the sole ownership of GE Vernova.”

Joseph Anis, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said, “GE Vernova has been honored to partner with Dussur on GESAT since 2017. We have a strong legacy of almost 90 years of contributions to the development of Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure, with up to 580 employees in the Kingdom today. We intend to continue supporting economic diversification, localization, high value exports, and talent development efforts in the country to further the Kingdom’s goals under Saudi Vision 2030. We also remain committed to collaborating with various stakeholders to help accelerate Saudi Arabia’s transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.”

GE Vernova spun-off from GE (NYSE: GE) and began trading as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on April 2, 2024. With approximately 55,000 wind turbines and 7,000 gas turbines, GE Vernova's technology base helps generate approximately 25% of the world's electricity and has a meaningful role to play in the energy transition in Saudi Arabia and around the globe.

GE Vernova, Systems With Intelligence (SWI) sign an MoU to collaborate on enhanced solutions for monitoring electrical grid assets

7 min read
  • The collaboration will focus on enhancing substation monitoring by combining technologies like gas sensing, breakers and bushing monitoring, and infrared thermography, along with AI and ML, to improve diagnostics and asset management for utilities and TSOs.

  • The first output from this collaboration, integrating SWI’s infrared sensors into GE Vernova’s DGA 900 Plus system, is expected to be commercially available in early 2025.

  • The two companies will also integrate SWI’s Pan/Tilt substation level sensors within GE Vernova’s GridBeatsTM Asset Vision, a substation monitoring solution converging different sensing techniques to enhance diagnostic intelligence, while simplifying solution complexity.

PARIS, France (Aug 27, 2024) – GE Vernova and Systems With Intelligence (SWI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today at the CIGRE event in Paris to develop advanced substation monitoring solutions. Through this collaboration the companies aim to integrate technologies like gas sensing, bushing monitoring and infrared thermography, along with AI and ML. The goal is to advance grid asset management by integrating SWI's cutting-edge infrared thermography and touchless monitoring systems with GE Vernova’s Grid Automation business's expertise in monitoring & diagnostic solutions of grid assets.

The initial focus of this collaboration will be on substation monitoring, where the companies will integrate their leading technologies to deliver converged monitoring and diagnostic intelligence, significantly enhancing asset management capabilities. This could streamline monitoring for utilities and Transmission System Operators (TSO’s), enabling earlier issue detection and leading to a more reliable, efficient, and stable power grid.

"Today’s asset managers are flooded with data from a myriad of sensing devices provided by various vendors. This often leads to fragmented data silos, requiring multiple software tools to manage and analyze the data independently," said Graham McGuigan, Product Line Leader for Monitoring & Diagnostics at GE Vernova. "Our collaboration with SWI is a step towards unifying these data streams into a more cohesive and intelligent monitoring system."

Angelo Rizzo, President and CEO of SWI, added, "By combining different sensing techniques, we can create solutions that offer enhanced diagnostic intelligence while simplifying the user experience. This collaboration is a significant move towards achieving that goal."

The first tangible outcome of this collaboration will be the integration of SWI’s fixed infrared sensors into GE Vernova’s DGA 900 Plus, a state-of-the-art multi-gas transformer monitoring system that monitors the health of power transformers by detecting early signs of problems and helps prevent transformer failures, ensuring a reliable and efficient power supply. This enhanced new solution, expected to be commercially available in early 2025, will allow asset managers to incorporate infrared thermography directly within the DGA 900 Plus platform, which already includes capabilities for dissolved gas analysis, bushing monitoring, and predictive modeling.

Looking ahead, GE Vernova and SWI plan to expand their collaboration to include the integration of SWI’s pan/tilt substation-level infrared sensors within GridBeatsTM Asset Vision substation monitoring solution, further advancing the capabilities of electrical grid asset management. GridBeatsTM is GE Vernova’s Grid Automation business’s portfolio of software defined automation solutions for grid digitalization.

GE Vernova Secures Major Order for Grid Equipment and Solutions in Algeria

6 min read
  • GE Vernova secures a major order to supply grid equipment and solutions through GEAT for Sonelgaz projects.

  • The order includes supplying advanced grid solutions for 134 substations by 2028 to enhance Algeria’s grid infrastructure.

Algiers, Algeria (July 17, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced that it has secured a major order from Sonelgaz through their joint venture, GE Algeria Turbines (GEAT), to enhance Algeria’s grid infrastructure. The order, which was booked in the second quarter of 2024, involves GE Vernova supplying GEAT with high voltage (HV) equipment, components, and grid automation solutions for 134 substations by 2028. GEAT will integrate this equipment at its Ain Yagout facility in Batna, Algeria for Sonelgaz projects.

The contract follows the agreement signed between Sonelgaz and GE Vernova earlier this year to diversify GEAT's core business towards manufacturing of high and extra-high voltage substations and marks a substantial step forward in the collaboration between GE Vernova, Sonelgaz, and GEAT. The supplied equipment is expected to play a pivotal role in integrating renewable energy sources and ensuring a reliable power supply for Algeria's growing population and economy.

Mourad Adjal, CEO of Sonelgaz Group said: “This order is the result of the expansion of existing capabilities between Sonelgaz and GE Vernova, through the recent amendment of their joint venture to enable the deployment of grid solutions in addition to the production of high and extra-high voltage substation equipment to implement Algeria’s electricity transmission network development plan. It also represents the culmination of Sonelgaz’s efforts to support the national integration program by producing high quality and advanced technology equipment for the first time in Algeria and Africa, ensuring the transfer of expertise in this field to Algeria.”

Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification Systems businesses, commented, "Securing this major order is a testament to our commitment to advancing Algeria's energy infrastructure. We are excited to deliver our advanced grid solutions that will enhance grid efficiency and support Algeria's energy transition. This order reinforces our dedication to fostering local talent and creating job opportunities in the region.”

GE Vernova spun-off from General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) and began trading as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on April 2, 2024. In addition to the GEAT joint venture with Sonelgaz, the company has a strong legacy of contributions to the development of Algeria’s energy sector, providing power generation, transmission, and distribution solutions, as well as software applications, and employs over 300 people in the country.

5 min read

BARCELONA, Spain (June 19, 2024) - As countries across Africa continue addressing their respective energy challenges, requiring diverse solutions for unique situations, GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) remains committed to keep electrifying and decarbonizing the continent and will be a lead sponsor of the Africa Energy Forum taking place in Barcelona, Spain from June 25 - 28, under the theme Energy Systems of the Future – Balancing Africa’s Needs with Global Goals. The event brings together the continent’s key stakeholders, investors, and future leaders, covering vital areas such as project developments, technology innovations, and cross-sector opportunities and collaborations.

A recent report reveals that about 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa – up to 50% of the region’s population – do not have access to electricity. Moreover, power demand is forecasted to grow further by about 3% in 2024, emphasizing the need to balance energy transition aspirations with electricity availability. GE Vernova’s team of industry experts plan to exchange ideas on and share best practices to accelerate the path to more reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for the continent at several sessions at the Africa Energy Forum, including: Tackling Grid Challenges to Improve Energy Systems; The African Gas Conundrum: Is it a Transitional Enabler or Not?; Investing in Senegal: A World Class Energy Partner; and Leveraging New Technologies to Lower Emissions and Promote Balance Across Energy.

Joseph Anis, President & CEO of Europe, Middle East & Africa for Gas Power at GE Vernova says: “Progress is indelibly linked to uninterrupted power supply in modern society. Investing in reliable and affordable electricity generation is as critical as advancing lower carbon power to support health, connectivity, safety, security, and improved quality of life. Accelerating Africa’s energy transition efforts will require cross-sector collaboration among the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors; the strategic deployment of multiple energy sources, including renewables and gas power; and investments in the grid together with software solutions. These steps can enable substantive reductions in emissions quickly and at scale, while advancing the technologies for low or near-zero carbon power generation and helping to meet the continent’s growing energy needs.”

GE Vernova spun-off from GE (NYSE: GE) and began trading as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on April 2, 2024. With approximately 55,000 wind turbines and 7,000 gas turbines globally, the company's technology base helps generate about 25% of the world's electricity and has a meaningful role to play in the energy transition. In Africa, GE Vernova-built technologies comprise up to 40% of installed power generation capacity. The company serves up to 260 customers across the continent and has a legacy of over 120 years of presence in Africa, supporting the development of critical infrastructure. It works across the electricity value chain on the continent, from generation through various power sources including wind, hydro, gas, and more, to providing transmission, distribution, and software solutions.

GE Vernova signs contract for Kalyon PV’s 157 MW solar project to support decarbonization of the energy sector in Turkey

8 min read
  • GE Vernova to supply its advanced FLEXINVERTERTM solar power station technology, as well as design and engineering services, to Kalyon Güneş Teknolojileri Üretim A.Ş.’s (Kalyon PV) solar project in Viranşehir

  • GE Vernova's deployment of its FLEXINVERTERTM technology is set to achieve a combined solar power capacity of 2.5 GWp/1.9 GWe across commissioned and ongoing projects in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (May 28, 2024) - GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced it has signed a contract with Kalyon PV to supply its FLEXINVERTERTM solar power station, as well as design and engineering services, to Kalyon PV in Viranşehir, Turkey. Inogen, GE Vernova’s regional solutions provider, will be in charge of the construction and installation of the solar power station.

GE Vernova’s solar power station is expected to power Kalyon Enerji’s 157 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaics (PV) factory, making Kalyon Enerji one of the first companies in Turkey to produce solar panels using 100% renewable electricity when commissioned.

“We are proud to be a driving force behind Turkey’s transition to clean energy. By investing in solar panel manufacturing and providing these solar panels to large-scale solar power plants, we’re not only providing sustainable energy solutions, but also creating jobs and contributing to Turkey's energy independence,” said Dr. Murtaza Ata, Board Member of Kalyon PV.

"After having executed several Renewable Energy Resources Zones (YEKA) projects in Turkey, we are now focusing on industries that want to produce captive power at a utility scale for their self-consumption through PV projects, such as Kalyon PV’s solar power plant in Viranşehir, and renewable hybrid projects, including large scale storage. We offer a comprehensive financing to support our customers, which includes support from export credit agencies. This financing package enables us to provide competitive financing options to facilitate and scale up the adoption of renewable energy technologies in the energy sector," said Megi Gabriyel, Region Leader Solar & Storage Solutions, Middle East, Africa & Turkey at GE Vernova.

With 2.5 GWp/1.9 GWe of combined solar power capacity in Turkey, including commissioned and ongoing projects, GE Vernova’s FLEXINVERTERTM technology is playing a pivotal role in the development of Turkey’s solar industry.

“Thanks to our strategic relationship with GE Vernova, we ensure seamless coordination of supply chain and field activities, addressing key challenges in project execution. Our professional teams, comprising more than one thousand employees, will provide continuous support, enabling swift intervention during both the installation and operation phases of the Viranşehir power plant,” said Ali Murat SOYDAN, Assoc. Prof. Dr., Chairman Inogen Group.

This collaboration builds upon an existing relationship, leveraging the success of Kalyon Enerji’s 1,347 MWp/1,000 MWe Karapinar solar power plant in the Konya Karapinar province, which deployed GE Vernova's FLEXINVERTERTM solar technology. Commissioned in 2023, the Karapinar facility is Turkey’s largest single source of solar power to date. The project was part of the first Turkish solar YEKA GES tender launched in 2017 by the Turkish Ministry of Energy under the Renewable Energy Resources Zones (YEKA) program that streamlines the development of large-scale solar and wind farms.

Turkey's rapid expansion of its renewable energy sector, driven by a growing electricity demand and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions, positions solar power as a key driver of this growth. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Turkey aims to commission an impressive 10 GW of solar capacity between 2017 and 2027, with projections indicating a surge of approximately 500% to 52.9 GW by 2035. 1

Additionally, GE Vernova is uniquely positioned to deploy its Battery Energy Storage Solution FLEXRESERVOIRTM coupled with financing to support Turkey’s next phase of renewable energy projects with storage.

In 2009, the United States Department of Energy was seeking a dose of radical thinking. Early that year, its newly created Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E) issued an open call for “the most revolutionary energy technologies.” If ARPA-E officials were expecting a steady trickle of ideas from business, academia, and research laboratories, they were wrong. They’d just opened the floodgates.
