Studsvik, GE Vernova Hitachi and Samsung C&T commit to advancing 1.2 GW nuclear power project in Sweden

  • Following a competitive evaluation process, Studsvik has selected GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Samsung C&T as its strategic collaborators for its first nuclear project in Sweden, planned for either at its existing licensed site in Nyköping or the Målma site in Valdemarsvik.

  • Together with GE Vernova’s Financial Services business and DS Investment Partners, the companies will advance an initial four-unit BWRX-300 project in Sweden with 1.2 GW of nuclear capacity. The first unit expected to enter operation in the mid-2030s.

NYKÖPING, Sweden (3 September 2026) - Studsvik AB (publ), GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, GE Vernova’s Financial Services business, DS Investment Partners and Samsung C&T today announced an agreement to advance the ReFirm nuclear program at Studsvik’s sites in Sweden. The agreement is exclusive for a fixed period, which the parties may extend. 

ReFirm is Studsvik’s multi-site small modular reactor (SMR) and new nuclear program, added through its acquisition of Kärnfull Next (KNXT) earlier this year. KNXT has worked with GE Vernova Hitachi on BWRX-300 deployment in Sweden since 2022 and entered into a strategic teaming agreement with Samsung C&T in December 2024. Today's announcement advances plans for the Nyköping and Valdemarsvik sites, with an initial four-unit BWRX-300 project totaling approximately 1,200 MWe planned for one of the two locations.  

At Nyköping, Studsvik operates an existing licensed nuclear facility. At Valdemarsvik, an application was submitted in March 2026, the first made under Sweden’s new legislation requiring government approval for nuclear facilities. Which site hosts the first project will be decided during the development work. 

The phased, multi-unit structure is intended to support standardization across the program and creates opportunities to capture lessons learned from early deployment and apply them to subsequent units, helping improve cost, schedule and productivity outcomes. 

It will also help increase Swedish industrial participation throughout engineering, procurement, construction, and long-term operations. This reflects the broader objective of building a supply chain that can help support not only the first project, but also follow-on units and wider deployment opportunities in Sweden and Europe. 

The agreement marks the next phase of development and does not constitute a final investment decision or authorization to construct. The parties will begin joint development work immediately, including commercial, technical, regulatory and financing activities during the exclusivity period.  

Studsvik leads permitting, the environmental impact assessment, site rights, community engagement and the dialogue with the Swedish state. GE Vernova Hitachi leads reactor engineering, licensing support and cost estimation and acts as engineering authority, and, together with Samsung C&T, acts as the execution team, giving the project single-point responsibility for construction and execution. During the exclusivity period, DS Investment Partners, a South Korean investment firm, will lead the investment and GE Vernova’s Financial Services business will participate in an advisory and financial structuring capacity in support of the consortium. 

A project company will be established to support development, financing, construction, ownership and operation of the plants, with details to be finalized in definitive agreements. 

Sweden is expanding nuclear capacity under legislation in force since 2026 that permits reactors at sites beyond the three existing plants and requires government approval for each, supported by a state financing framework of loans and two-way contracts for difference.

GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and AFRY to collaborate in the deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor

STOCKHOLM (April 7, 2026) – GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) today announced that it has entered into a Main Services Agreement (MSA) with AFRY, a leading Swedish engineering, project management and advisory company, to support the deployment of its BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

Through this non-exclusive collaboration, AFRY will deliver engineering and advisory services that leverage its deep sector knowledge, regional expertise and extensive presence across Europe. The collaboration is expected to enable Swedish industries to participate in high-value opportunities linked to the growing European and global SMR market.

“This agreement reflects our commitment to building a strong Swedish and European industrial ecosystem around the BWRX-300, going beyond reactor technology to enable long-term collaboration, local capability development and regional value creation,” said Jason Cooper, CEO, GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy. “Sweden has a strong industrial base and world-class engineering capabilities, and by working with AFRY we are reinforcing our ability to deliver the BWRX-300 while enabling local industry to play a meaningful role in Europe’s energy transition.”

By combining GVH’s proven BWRX-300 technology and global project experience with AFRY’s sector-engineering strength, the collaboration is designed to support efficient, repeatable, and scalable deployment across multiple projects in Europe. In addition to engineering work, AFRY will also support GVH in the development of a license application for the BWRX-300 to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM).

Momentum around the BWRX-300 continues to build globally. The first BWRX-300 is under construction at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington site in Canada, with completion expected by the end of the decade, which will make it the first small modular reactor in the Western world. Key components like the reactor pressure vessel are being manufactured, and site construction is progressing according to plan. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted and is reviewing Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) application to construct the first BWRX-300 in the U.S. at the utility’s Clinch River site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. These developments, and others, support GVH’s progress and leadership in scaling and deploying SMRs commercially to customers around the globe.

Global Nuclear Fuel’s GENUSA awarded fuel supply contract by Vattenfall for Forsmark Plant in Sweden

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (February 19, 2026) – Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF, a GE Vernova-led alliance with Hitachi, Ltd. and affiliate of GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH)) and ENUSA today announced the awarding of a contract to provide fuel reloads for Vattenfall’s Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden.

The new fuel supply contract was awarded to GENUSA, which is jointly owned by GNF and ENUSA, and runs from 2028 and includes several reloads of GNF2, a high-performance fuel assembly designed to offer increased power and lower operating costs.

“With a long history supporting the nuclear industry in the Nordics, ENUSA has manufactured more than 3,500 assemblies of GNF-designed fuel for Forsmark since 1993 and we look forward to supporting Vattenfall with our efficient and reliable fuel,” said Craig Ranson, Installed Base CEO, GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and CEO of GNF.

The GNF2 fuel for the Forsmark site will be fabricated in Spain at ENUSA’s Nuclear Fuel Manufacturing Plant in Juzbado, utilizing GNF-supplied components.

"We are honored by Vattenfall’s decision to extend this collaboration that started more than 30 years and that will strengthen our relationship,” said Mariano Moreno, President and CEO of ENUSA. “The Juzbado facility has already supplied more than 12,600 assemblies of BWR fuel to customers throughout Europe and this new contract shows the trust in the GENUSA supply of products and engineering services.”

The fuel assemblies, whose components are designed by GNF, include proven Defender™ PLUS debris filters that are designed to significantly improve the chance of stopping feedwater debris from reaching fuel assemblies.

BWRX-300 small modular reactor down selected by Vattenfall

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (August 21, 2025) – The GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) has been down selected by Vattenfall as it evaluates the construction of new reactors adjacent to its Ringhals plant site on the Värö Peninsula in Sweden.

“We are excited with Vattenfall’s decision, which follows a thorough evaluation process,” said Maví Zingoni, CEO, Power, GE Vernova. “As the only small modular reactor under construction in the Western world, the BWRX-300 is strongly positioned to help Sweden meet its expanding energy needs and net zero ambitions.”

GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Fortum sign early works agreement to advance potential deployment of BWRX-300 small modular reactor

HELSINKI, Finland (July 1, 2025)GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) and Fortum have entered into an early works agreement to advance potential deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) in Finland and Sweden.

Fortum completed a new nuclear feasibility study in March and announced that it had selected the BWRX-300 as one of the technologies it is considering for potential deployment in both nations.

“After diligently evaluating several aspects of SMR technologies over the past two years Fortum concluded that the BWRX-300 is a technology for potential deployment in Finland and Sweden,” said Nicole Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer, GVH. “We have a long history supporting the nuclear industry in the Nordics and we look forward to working with Fortum as it continues to develop its capabilities for new nuclear.”

Through the early works agreement GVH and Fortum will work on pre-licensing and engineering activities for site adaption in Finland and Sweden with potential BWRX-300 deployment in the second half of the 2030s.

The 300 MW BWRX-300, a 10th generation design, builds on decades of real-world boiling water reactor operating experience and innovation, using a proven delivery model and leveraging GVH’s experience with cross-border regulatory collaboration.

Momentum continues to build around the global deployment of the BWRX-300. In May, the Province of Ontario and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced approval to proceed with construction of the first BWRX-300 at OPG’s Darlington site near Toronto. A total of four BWRX-300s are planned for the site with construction of the first unit expected to be complete by the end of the decade.

Also in May, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced that it has submitted an application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to construct the first BWRX-300 in the U.S., at the utility’s Clinch River site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. These developments support GVH’s leadership position in the SMR sector. Fortum is now poised to benefit from this depth of experience and expertise.
