CAMBRIDGE, Mass. October 03, 2024 – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced that its Power Conversion business has secured a contract to develop and deliver a Propulsion Load System (PLS) for the U.S. Navy’s land-based testing facilities to support a new generation of advanced naval surface vessels. These systems are planned to be used to rigorously test the performance and reliability of shipboard propulsion systems in a controlled, land-based environment before deployment at sea.

Contract Overview

The scope of the contract, which was booked in the second quarter of 2024, includes the design, manufacturing, delivery, and installation of two independent PLS units at a U.S. Navy facility over a three-year period. The program and the facility, managed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD), will serve as the primary site for testing and qualification of propulsion systems for a new generation of advanced naval vessels, such as the FFG-62 and DDG(X).  By simulating real-world shipboard conditions, the PLS is designed to help reduce technical risks, streamline development timelines, and train future crews, providing a strategic advantage to the Navy.

The system is expected to incorporate a full suite of power conversion technologies, including propulsion load electric motors, E-houses, power electronic motor drives, switchboards, motor control centers, load banks, transformers, and related essential infrastructure.

“GE Vernova is proud to contribute to the U.S. Navy’s future naval capabilities by delivering innovative testing solutions that help lower the technology risk and prepare crews for the next generation of surface vessels,” said Ed Torres, Business Line Leader of GE Vernova’s Power Conversion Business. “This contract reflects our commitment to advancing naval technology through reliable, efficient propulsion load management systems.”

Technological Significance:

The contract further solidifies GE Vernova’s leadership in providing more energy-efficient electric propulsion technologies for complex naval applications. With over 40 U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard vessel references, decades of experience with land-based test facilities, and successful integration of similar systems in programs such as the Columbia Class and Zumwalt Class, GE Vernova continues to demonstrate its expertise in this field.

Program Background

The award comes from the US Navy’s Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships under the program offices PMS 515 (frigates) and PMS 460 (DDG(X) program), with technical and programmatic ownership by the NSWC. The agreement, administered through the Maritime Sustainment Technology and Innovation Consortium (MSTIC) and managed by Advanced Technology International (ATI) is the largest agreement awarded to date on the MSTIC Other Transaction Authority (OTA).

This is GE Vernova Power Conversion’s first Other Transaction Authority (OTA) award. OTAs provide the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and other government agencies with the flexibility needed to carry out innovation, prototype, research, and production programs by adapting and incorporating business practices that align with commercial industry standards. They promote flexible, faster, and more cost-effective product design and execution.

BRISBANE, Australia (September 30, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced today that it has signed an agreement with Aula Energy and CS Energy to provide 38 6 MW–164m1 workhorse turbines for their Boulder Creek Wind Farm in Queensland, Australia.

Boulder Creek is the first standalone project-financed split-scope wind farm in Australia, representing a milestone in the evolution of the nation’s wind market and underscoring GE Vernova’s commitment to partnership and flexibility in aligning global delivery models to create value for customers in the country.

The project, located 40km south-west of Rockhampton, brings the total number of GE Vernova 6 MW platform turbines in operation or under construction in Australia to more than 250. The deal, which was booked in the third quarter of 2024, includes a five-year full-service agreement.

The wind farm is expected to supply power for the equivalent of 85,000 Australian homes2, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 379,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent each year3, comparable to taking more than 130,000 petrol cars off the road4.

GE Vernova worked closely with Aula Energy, Powerlink Queensland and the Australian Energy Market Operator to achieve the grid offer-to-connect well in advance of project financial close, building off grid approvals secured for the 6 MW platform in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.

“We are delighted to be working closely together with our customers, CS Energy and Aula Energy to bring reliable and affordable wind energy to Australia to increase the renewable energy mix. This project is another example of GE Vernova’s ability to deliver on our workhorse strategy – producing fewer variants in large quantities at scale to drive quality and reliability across the fleet for our customers. With a broad cross portfolio of capabilities underpinned by world-leading technology, GE Vernova is uniquely positioned to help lead the energy transition,” says Gilan Sabatier, Chief Commercial Officer, Onshore Wind, GE Vernova.

CS Energy Chief Executive Officer Darren Busine said, “Our investment in the Boulder Creek Wind Farm demonstrates our ongoing commitment to central Queensland and providing opportunities for our people and local communities to share the benefits of the energy transformation.”

Aula Energy Chief Executive Officer Chad Hymas said “I’m very pleased to have reached this crucial stage in the development of the Boulder Creek Wind Farm. In collaboration with GE Vernova and our other project partners, we can now get construction underway to deliver the clean energy benefits of this project for Queensland.“

Site preparatory works at the Boulder Creek Wind Farm are expected to commence before the end of 2024, with activity aiming to ramp up from early to mid-2025, and operations anticipated to commence in 2027.

GE Vernova's Onshore Wind business has a total installed base of approximately 56,000 turbines and nearly 120 GW of installed capacity worldwide. Committed to customer success for more than two decades, its product portfolio offers proven, next-generation technology that leads with high-power turbines to enable high-quality scale and drive decarbonization through more affordable and sustainable renewable energy generation. The GE Vernova 6 MW platform to be used at Boulder Creek Wind Farm is the most widely deployed onshore wind turbine above 5 MW outside China.

Australia has been part of the company’s story for more than 125 years and today is increasingly important for GE Vernova, providing careers for ~400 employees and ~200 field engineers across every State and Territory. With more than 3 GW of wind turbines in operation or under construction, 10+GW of gas-based power generation, software running 80% of the electricity grid, providing ~40% of grid infrastructure of major utilities, GE Vernova is actively supporting efforts to make electricity more sustainable, affordable, reliable and accessible across Australia.

1. GE’s Vernova’s 6.0 MW turbine with a 164-meter rotor is what we refer to as the 6.0 MW-164m.

2. Estimated equivalent number of homes powered based on country-specific electricity household consumption data (Enerdata, 2020)

3. GHG emissions avoidance provided by Green Investment Group, calculated using country-specific Harmonized IFI Grid Factors (see https://www.greeninvestmentgroup.com/en/who-we-are/green-impact-governance.html)

  • 37 learners graduate from programme designed to inspire the next generation of engineers

Johannesburg, South Africa (September 27, 2024) - Next Engineers, a global college-and career-readiness programme working to increase the diversity of young people in engineering, celebrated the graduation of its first-ever Engineering Academy learners in Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday, September 27. The graduation ceremony marked the programme’s contribution towards bridging the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills gap in the country through exposing learners to hands-on engineering experiences and career pathways.

The 37 learners from 15 high schools across Johannesburg who completed the programme, many of whom plan to study towards an engineering-related qualification at university or technical higher learning institutions, were joined by their families at University of Witwatersrand, Sturrock Park Sports Hall, to celebrate their achievements. Launched in 2022, PROTEC, University of Witwatersrand, and Kutitiva Foundation are the educational partners for the local Next Engineers programme, and local GE Vernova engineers and employees actively engage with Academy participants through hands-on, skill-based volunteering.

“We are proud to see our first cohort of learners graduating and wish them all a successful learning trajectory in the next stage of their education journey,” said Matsi Eseu, South Africa HR Director for GE Vernova. “At GE Vernova, we believe education is a significant driver of economic inclusion and it’s inspiring to see the positive impact the Next Engineers programme is having, not just in empowering tomorrow’s engineers who will solve society’s most pressing challenges but also in increasing the diversity of young people, particularly females, in the engineering sector. We extend our gratitude to all those involved in the Engineering Academy.”

Learners who complete the Engineering Academy program and enroll in a qualified engineering or engineering-related degree programme receive financial aid to support them as they continue on their paths to becoming engineers.
