New GE Vernova H-Class technology to modernize power plant in Japan

6 min read
  • Three GE Vernova 7HA.03 gas turbines to be installed at The Kansai Electric Power Company, Incorporated in Osaka, Japan

  • Replacement of aging conventional LNG power generation assets (consisting of three boilers and three steam turbines) with GE Vernova advanced equipment is expected to improve power plant performance and lower CO2 emissions

TOKYO, JAPAN (October 8, 2024) — GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced an order for three GE Vernova 7HA.03 gas turbines to be installed at The Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc.’s (“Kansai Electric”) Nanko power station in Osaka, Japan. GE Vernova’s advanced 7HA.03 power generation equipment will replace the existing aging conventional LNG power generation assets (consisting of three boilers and three steam turbines) and is expected to increase power plant efficiency, while reducing its carbon dioxide emissions.

Japan has set ambitious targets to achieve net zero by 2050 as per the latest Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) plans.  As recently described in GE Vernova’s “2024 Japan Energy Outlook” White Paper, the Japan’s energy system is in transition, and the country has targeted  achieving this decarbonization goal through setting up investments in lower carbon generation sources and the support of “Economic Efficiency”, one of the three “S+3E” pillars within the revised national 6th Strategic Energy Plan (including also “Safety plus Energy Security”, and “Environmental Sustainability”).

“The plant is expected to deliver up to 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of electricity to the grid in total and to be the among the most efficient in the country,” said Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO, Asia of GE Vernova’s Gas Power. “In addition, 7HA.03 gas turbine technology currently has the capability to burn up to 50% by volume of hydrogen when blended with natural gas, with a technology pathway to 100% over the next decade. We look forward to bringing this advanced technology to Kansai Electric, with whom we have a longstanding relationship built on years of mutual respect and trust, to help revitalize the Japanese power industry with more efficient and more sustainable technology, in alignment with the country’s energy goals.”

In addition, GE Vernova is also expected to provide field services.

GE Vernova is a key player in Japan’s energy transition, having enabled power generation for Japan for more than 130 years. To date, the company delivers more than 50% of Japan’s heavy duty gas power capacity and supports the country’s growing renewable and nuclear energy needs.

GE Vernova selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop AI Assistant for permitting and trainings for hydrogen deployment

9 min read
  • Award supports three-year, $1 million project to develop an AI Assistant trained for safe hydrogen (H2) handling and permitting and trainings focused on the safety for hydrogen development

  • GE Vernova will lead a diverse project team named “H2Net”, including Clemson University, and Roper Mountain Science Center

  • These US federal investments in hydrogen can contribute to a more sustainable future with less carbon emissions, while boosting economic opportunities across the country

GREENVILLE, USA (September 26, 2024) — GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced today that GE Vernova was selected for award negotiations by the U.S. Department Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) to lead a project aiming to enable permitting and safety for hydrogen deployment. The project has the objective to identify the primary challenges to siting, permitting, and installation across the value chain from hydrogen production through end-use. GE Vernova will lead a diverse project team named “H2Net”, including Clemson University, and Roper Mountain Science Center based in Greenville, SC, USA. GE Vernova will enter award negotiations valued in $1 million in US federal funding with the DOE to finalize the terms and the scope of the project.

As part of this program, H2Net is expected to develop an AI Assistant that is trained specifically on the relevant, critical documents for safe H2 handling and permitting. The AI Assistant, called HySAGE, Hydrogen Smart Assistant for Governance Execution, will be validated against requirements and lessons learned at GE Vernova’s Gas Turbine Manufacturing and Technology Center in Greenville, SC. The trainings were completed at both GE Vernova’s Greenville site in the United States and the Belfort site in France.

“Dussur’s decision to sell its shares to GE Vernova follows achieving the investment and development objectives of this investment in GESAT, the company has been able to employ and train a number of young national talents; and transfer knowledge in the field of gas turbine  technology,” said Dr. Raed Alrayes, Chief Executive Officer at Dussur.

He also noted that, “Dussur’s investment policy is to enter partnerships that establish transformational industries that the Kingdom needs or support its supply chains. After ensuring the stability and maturity of these industrial capabilities, Dussur exits with the aim of renewing its investments into new industrial opportunities of greater value to the local economy. Today, we are proud of the industrial capabilities that distinguish GESAT and can further grow under the sole ownership of GE Vernova.”

Joseph Anis, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said, “GE Vernova has been honored to partner with Dussur on GESAT since 2017. We have a strong legacy of almost 90 years of contributions to the development of Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure, with up to 580 employees in the Kingdom today. We intend to continue supporting economic diversification, localization, high value exports, and talent development efforts in the country to further the Kingdom’s goals under Saudi Vision 2030. We also remain committed to collaborating with various stakeholders to help accelerate Saudi Arabia’s transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.”

GE Vernova spun-off from GE (NYSE: GE) and began trading as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on April 2, 2024. With approximately 55,000 wind turbines and 7,000 gas turbines, GE Vernova's technology base helps generate approximately 25% of the world's electricity and has a meaningful role to play in the energy transition in Saudi Arabia and around the globe.

  • The plant provides flexible, efficient, and reliable power needed to enhance grid stability, support the growth of renewable power generation and coal phase-out

  • Tambak Lorok combined cycle plant features GE Vernova’s combined cycle equipment including: a 9HA.02 gas turbine, a steam turbine and a Once Through Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG)

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (August 30, 2024) – On the heels of GE Vernova’s 100th HA gas turbine commissioned globally announcement,  GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) celebrated today the start of commercial operation of PLN Indonesia Power (PLNIP)’s 780-megawatt (MW) Tambak Lorok Combined Cycle Power Plant Block 3 (“Tambak Lorok”), in Tanjung Mas, Central Java. With the highest energy consumption among the Southeast Asian Nations, Indonesia’s energy use is set to rise significantly as its economy and population grow. Powered by GE Vernova’s HA combined cycle equipment, the plant can deliver the electricity needed to power the equivalent of approximately 5 million homes in Indonesia.

To support Indonesia’s climate and energy transition agenda, the government of Indonesia has pledged to stop commissioning new coal power plant and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier, Indonesia is targeting to retire the entire fleet of coal plants by 2040*.

“Tambak Lorok project represents a milestone for Indonesia, adding to the system a large-capacity plant that brings stability to the country's electricity matrix,” said Edwin Nugraha Putra, CEO of PLN Indonesia Power. “Tambak Lorok is in line with the national energy policy to lower emissions from the power sector. We trust GE Vernova, Marubeni Corporation and Hutama Karya, as the EPC, have delivered the highest standard of quality and safety in building this power plant that will provide reliable and more sustainable electricity to the Java grid.”

Tambak Lorok is powered by GE Vernova’s advanced equipment, namely a 9HA.02 gas turbine, a STF-D650 steam turbine, GE Vernova’s Once Through (OT) HRSG and balance of plant equipment. In addition to the core power plant equipment delivered in a turnkey combined cycle configuration, GE Vernova is contracted to provide a holistic solution including a 15-year service agreement to manage all aspects of the project’s lifecycle, training and maintenance management to enhance operational performance and increase the reliability of Tambak Lorok plant. The training will support skills development and knowledge transfer to improve the capability of PLN IP’s operations team.

“Our HA technology has been selected to increase power generation capacity in Indonesia and support its decarbonization process,” said Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO, Asia of GE Vernova's Gas Power. “In our commitment to support Indonesia’s power development and economic growth, our HA technology offers the lowest emissions in the industry to give our customers, like PLN Indonesia Power, the ability to reduce fuel consumption while lowering carbon emissions, moving forward this technology will help transition to net-zero carbon emissions.”

With GE Vernova’s H-class leading technology the plant has a lower emissions impact with up to 60% less emissions compared to other plants of the same size powered by diesel, coal and other fossil fuels. In addition, to further advance decarbonization utilizing gas power, H-Class gas turbine portfolio currently has the capability to burn up to 50% by volume of hydrogen when blended with natural gas with an expected roadmap to 100% in the future.

GE Vernova marks significant milestone, commissioning 100th HA gas turbine globally with more than 60 additional units on order

9 min read
  • HA technology can play a crucial role in the global energy transition facilitating coal-to gas switching and providing the necessary flexible power to integrate greater levels of variable renewable energy

  • GE Vernova’s 100th HA gas turbine, a 7HA.03, the world’s largest, most efficient, and flexible gas turbine with the lowest cost conversion of gas to electricity for 60-hertz power plant operators, is installed at KOSPO’s Shinsejong Combined Cycle Power Plant

  • Record units commissioned today with dozens more on order can lead to current and future services and maintenance contracts for decades to come

SEJONG, SOUTH KOREA (July 15, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced Korea Southern Power Co, Ltd.  (KOSPO)’s Shinsejong Combined Cycle Power Plant achieved the start of operation in Nuri-ri, Yeongi-myon, Sejong Multifunctional Administrative City, the administrative capital of South Korea. The plant, powered by GE Vernova’s 7HA.03 gas turbine, marks the company’s 100th HA unit commissioned across the globe, and the first 7HA.03 gas turbine in South Korea.

With the highest number of H-Class units ordered, GE Vernova’s HA gas turbines have accumulated more than 2.5 million commercial operating hours continuing to be the fastest growing fleet in the heavy-duty gas turbine H-Class segment. The fleet boasts an installed capacity of more than 53 gigawatts (GW) of power, the equivalent capacity needed to power nearly 40 million American homes.

“Demand for electricity is on the rise, and we expect it to continue to accelerate,” said Eric Gray, CEO at GE Vernova’s Gas Power business. “Highly efficient HA gas power plants can play a crucial role in balancing energy transition commitments with electricity reliability. Many HA combined cycle power plants facilitate the coal-to gas transition and provide the necessary power to balance the variable nature of renewables, helping to ensure energy system reliability and grid stability.”

In addition to benefitting customers and supporting the energy transition, the growing fleet of operating HA gas turbines can provide significant services backlog for GE Vernova over the long-term via maintenance and upgrade opportunities.

HA gas turbines can save over 3.3 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, per unit compared to an average coal-fired plant of the same size. This is equivalent to removing 680,000 cars off the road for every HA unit deployed. In addition, GE Vernova simulated that H-class units in South Korea could reduce carbon emission intensity of the fossil fleet per kilowatt hour more than three fold over current levels if coal plants were retired and this newer, advanced technology was deployed in country.

GE Vernova HA class combined cycle power plants emit approximately 50–60 percent less CO2 compared to a typical coal-fired power plant of the same size, significantly lower nitrous oxides and particulate matter, no mercury, and essentially no sulfur oxides.

Energy combustion systems are a key component of GE Vernova’s HA gas turbines and modern combustion technologies can increase efficiency and reduce emissions. As a leader in combustion technology, GE Vernova developed the DLN 2.6e combustion system with its advanced premixer technology, installed in GE Vernova 60Hz H-class turbines, offering a step change in performance, emissions and fuel flexibility. This technology can enable the 7HA.03 gas turbines installed at Shinsejong to generate power with lower NOx emissions, three parts per million of NOx at the main stack with efficient flue gas treatment system.

With South Korea’s power generation very reliant on heavy fossil fuels today (with coal and oil covering nearly 60% of power needs, according to IEA estimates), gas power can play a crucial role in facilitating its transition to a lower carbon future. The Shinsejong plant will generate power to sell at Korea Power Exchange and heat to supply district heating to Sejong City. This will help KOSPO meet the growing demand for heat, air conditioning, and electricity with increased efficiency. in alignment with the country’s commitment to moving the country to being carbon neutral by 2050.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate with KOSPO, and with all our customers and employees, this latest milestone for our proven HA fleet, which is helping power plant operators increase efficiency, retire coal-fired facilities to reduce emissions, and integrate greater levels of renewable energy globally,” commented Gray. “Beyond the proven benefits of the HA fleet, multi-decade services and maintenance contracts can ensure continued performance enhancements and efficient operations for power plant customers.”

In a related milestone, in April, GE Vernova celebrated the production of the 2000th gas turbine manufactured at its site in Belfort, France, followed by last week’s  announcement of the first HA turbine completed in Saudi Arabia at GE Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT) facility – a joint venture between Dussur and GE Vernova.

GE Vernova’s H-Class combined cycle power plant is one of the most responsive and flexible in the industry, enabling grid operators to dispatch power quickly, complementing intermittent renewable sources. The fleet is highly fuel flexible and able to operate on a variety of fuels, including blends of hydrogen and natural gas that may enable further emissions reduction in the future. In addition, H-class combined cycle plants can be retrofitted with a carbon capture system that can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95 percent.

China's Medium and Long-term Plan for the Development of Hydrogen Energy Industry proposes an accelerated conversion towards efficient hydrogen production from renewable energy, and we are proud Huizhou plant is expected to become the first hydrogen-blended natural gas facility to use GE Vernova’s  gas turbines in China.”

GE Vernova has over 120 units worldwide that have run fully or partially on hydrogen and accumulated over 8.5 million operating hours.

Guangdong Huizhou project marks the first localized 9HA.01 manufactured by General Harbin Electric Gas Turbine (Qinhuangdao) Co., Ltd. in China. This joint venture was formed in 2019 between GE and Harbin Electric as a joint effort to focus on heavy duty gas turbine localization, aiming to deliver more efficient and reliable support for China gas power plants, including those that operate on blends of natural gas and hydrogen. Harbin Electric also provided steam turbine, generator and balance-of-plant equipment for the power plant.

GE and Harbin Electric have been suppliers for Guangdong Energy Group (“GEG”) for many years. GEG selected two GE Vernova 9F.05 gas turbines for Xinhui Power Plant, which achieved the successful commercial operation in 2018. Additionally, GE Vernova is currently supporting the plant operator’s transition from coal-to-gas at its Dongguan Ningzhou power plant. GEG selected three GE Vernova 9HA.02 gas turbines and Harbin Electric’s steam turbines, generators and other auxiliary equipment for the Dongguan Ningzhou combined cycle power plant in Guangdong province, also in the Greater Bay Area.

Operating in China for over 40 years, GE Vernova has been delivering innovative products and services that create significant value for its power generation customers, and now helps power plant operators in addressing the energy transition challenge. GE Vernova serves around 110 customers and more than 240 gas turbines in China, with an installed power capacity of 50 gigawatts (GW).
