  • New 420 kV, 63 kA Live Tank Circuit Breaker expands the range of technologies available for demanding high-voltage transmission applications

  • Uses a CO₂/O₂ gas mixture instead of SF₆ while delivering the performance and reliability required by modern transmission networks

  • Developed with support from the EU LIFE Programme, the technology expands GE Vernova’s GRiDEA portfolio of high-voltage transmission solutions

PARIS, France (August 26, 2026) - GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced the launch of its new 420 kV, 63 kA CO₂-O₂ Live Tank Circuit Breaker, GL316c, at CIGRE Paris 2026, expanding the range of technologies available to network operators as they modernize and reinforce high-voltage transmission infrastructure.

Circuit breakers are essential safety devices on the electricity network. They rapidly stop the flow of electricity when a fault occurs, helping protect equipment and maintain the reliable operation of the wider power system. They are used in substations across transmission networks, where high-voltage power lines and major electrical equipment connect.

The new GL316c is designed for some of the most demanding applications on high-voltage transmission networks. By using a mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen (CO₂/O₂) instead of sulfur hexafluoride, or SF₆, the technology gives network operators an additional option as they modernize their infrastructure while maintaining the performance required at 420 kV and short-circuit breaking capability of up to 63 kA.

“As transmission networks carry more power and operate under increasingly demanding conditions, equipment at the highest voltage levels has to deliver exceptional switching performance and reliability,” said Eric Chaussin, VP and CEO Power Transmission Business. “Advancing our CO₂-O₂ technology to 420 kV and 63 kA is an important engineering step, extending SF₆-free capability into applications where fault currents are among the most challenging on the network.”

Building on EU-supported innovation

The GL316c was originally developed for 420 kV, 50 kA applications as part of GE Vernova’s “LIFE SF6-free HV Breaker” project, co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme.

Building on that development, GE Vernova’s engineering teams further tested and advanced the technology for applications requiring short-circuit breaking capability of up to 63 kA, extending its potential use across demanding transmission applications.

The new circuit breaker expands GE Vernova’s GRiDEATM portfolio, which brings together technologies designed to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of modern electricity networks while helping customers reduce reliance on SF₆.

The GL316c also forms part of GE Vernova’s broader work to develop alternatives to fluorinated gases across its high-voltage equipment portfolio.

From development to deployment

The new 420 kV, 63 kA circuit breaker is planned to be manufactured at GE Vernova’s facility in Villeurbanne, France.

GE Vernova is launching the GL316c during CIGRE Paris 2026, taking place August 23–28, where a full-scale 420 kV CO2-O2 model is being showcased at Stand C93.

GE Vernova marks 10 years of SF₆-free innovation with launch of new 170 kV gas-insulated switchgear

4 min read
  • New F35g 170 kV gas-insulated switchgear completes GE Vernova’s SF₆-free GIS range for transmission grids

  • Launch marks ten years since GE Vernova introduced its first product using g³ technology as an alternative to SF₆

  • Manufactured in Europe, the new GIS is available for order following its launch at CIGRE Paris 2026

PARIS, France, (August 26, 2026) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced the launch of its new 170 kV SF₆-free gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) at CIGRE Paris 2026, expanding its GRiDEATM portfolio of technologies designed to help utilities reduce the carbon emission impact of high-voltage electricity infrastructure.

The launch comes ten years after GE Vernova introduced its first product using g³ technology, developed as an alternative to sulfur hexafluoride, or SF₆. SF₆ has traditionally been widely used in high-voltage electrical equipment because of its strong insulating properties, but it is also a potent greenhouse gas.

GIS is used in substations to safely control and protect the flow of high-voltage electricity. Its compact design makes it particularly important where space is limited, including in urban substations and other constrained locations.

The new F35g 170 kV GIS is designed to provide utilities with the performance, reliability and compact footprint expected from conventional high-voltage GIS, without using SF6 .The launch of the F35g 170 kV completes GE Vernova’s SF₆-free GIS range for transmission grids, spanning 72.5 kV, 145 kV, 170 kV, 245 kV and 420 kV.

“Over the past decade, the challenge has evolved from simply finding an alternative insulating gas to designing high-voltage equipment that can help customers reduce carbon emission impact across the life cycle of their infrastructure without compromising performance,” said Yannick Kieffel, Power Transmission Chief Technology Officer, GE Vernova. “The F35g 170 kV is the latest step in that journey, giving customers another option as they move away from SF₆ while continuing to build the reliable and compact transmission networks they need.”

A decade of g³ development

Since the first g³ product was introduced in 2016, GE Vernova has progressively expanded the technology across its high-voltage portfolio. The new 170 kV GIS extends that work into another widely used transmission voltage range and supports utilities seeking to reduce their reliance on fluorinated greenhouse gases.

The F35g 170 kV is also digital-native, integrating monitoring and digital capabilities intended to give operators greater visibility into equipment condition and performance. The product is designed to meet both IEC and IEEE requirements, supporting its use across different electricity markets.

As part of its product development approach, GE Vernova also uses Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) to evaluate carbon emissions across stages including raw material extraction, manufacturing, transportation, use and end of life. These assessments are intended to help identify opportunities to reduce global warming impact beyond the insulating gas itself.

Development of the F35g 170 kV GIS has been partially supported through France 2030, operated by ADEME, supporting the development and industrialization of technologies intended to contribute to France’s transition toward lower-carbon infrastructure.

The new GIS will be manufactured by GE Vernova in Europe and is available for order following its official launch at CIGRE Paris 2026.

The F35g 170 kV forms part of GE Vernova’s GRiDEATM portfolio, which brings together technologies focused on reducing the carbon footprint of electrical equipment while supporting the reliability and performance required by critical grid infrastructure.

GE Vernova introduces medium-voltage UPS to help accelerate the buildout of AI factories and energy-intensive industries

6 min read
  • Keeps critical AI and industrial operations running with stable, high-quality power, even when the power supply is disturbed, as well as helps protect gas turbines and grid network from drastic load fluctuations.

  • Moves power protection to true medium voltage, allowing much larger parts of an AI data center to be protected through one coordinated system, resulting in a simplified and less costly architecture

  • Adds a new building block, based on proven technologies, to GE Vernova’s end-to-end data center offering, strengthening its power-to-rack capabilities inside the facility

PARIS, France, (24 August 2026) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced its new medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply, or MV-UPS, designed to keep data centers, AI factories and other energy-intensive facilities running on stable, continuous, high-quality power around the clock.

Electricity demand is accelerating, and AI data centers are among its fastest-growing drivers. For these facilities, the central challenge is continuity, as even brief electrical disturbances can interrupt critical workloads. Their electricity demand can also shift sharply as workloads change, placing additional strain on the grid or generation sources supplying them and making such large loads more challenging to connect.

Today, UPS protection is typically applied at low voltage, after electricity has been stepped down. This means smaller sections of the facility are protected separately, while sudden changes in electricity demand can still be passed back to the grid or generation sources supplying the facility.

GE Vernova’s MV-UPS moves this protection to medium voltage, creating a stability block between the facility and its power supply. This allows one coordinated system to protect a much larger part of the facility, while also helping prevent sudden changes in electricity demand from being passed directly back to the grid or generation sources.

"Reliable, uninterrupted power is foundational to every energy-intensive industry, and AI data centers are raising that requirement to a new level of scale and complexity," said Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification segment. "That requires us to rethink how power is protected and managed inside these facilities. Our MV-UPS is the true end-to-end medium-voltage power stability solution for energy-intensive industries, including data centers. It applies proven GE Vernova power-conversion and energy-storage technologies in a new innovative way, giving customers the reliability but also the cost and footprint efficiency their operations demand at the scale these new profiles of load now require”

How the MV-UPS works

The solution is installed on a facility’s medium-voltage network between the power supply and critical loads. It combines power-conversion technology, advanced controls and integrated energy storage to help maintain stable voltage and frequency for critical operations while buffering sudden changes in facility demand before they are passed back to the grid or onsite generation.

By providing protection at medium voltage, one coordinated system can support much larger blocks of critical load than traditional low-voltage UPS arrangements. The solution is also designed to help customers meet power-quality and grid-connection requirements, make more flexible use of energy storage and simplify downstream electrical infrastructure, accelerating the build process.

GE Vernova expects to begin shipping MV-UPS systems in mid-2027, with energization of the first project expected in late 2027.

Strengthening GE Vernova’s power-to-rack capabilities

The MV-UPS adds a new stability block to GE Vernova’s end-to-end data center offering, strengthening its power-to-rack capabilities inside the facility. These capabilities bring together the electrical infrastructure needed to generate, connect, manage and deliver power, from power generation and grid connection through to the systems supporting computing loads inside the facility.

GE Vernova’s current data center offering includes gas turbines for power generation; substations, high- and medium-voltage transformers, switchgear and gas-insulated switchgear to connect facilities to the grid; energy management systems to coordinate power supply with changing facility demand; and power-conversion technologies that help manage and deliver electricity inside the data center.

The MV-UPS expands this offering by adding medium-voltage power protection and stability. GE Vernova is also developing solid-state transformer technology to support more compact and efficient power conversion closer to the rack. Together, these technologies strengthen GE Vernova’s power-to-rack approach to meeting the growing scale, reliability and electrical-efficiency needs of AI data centers.

Additional product specifications and technical details are available on GE Vernova’s website.

GE Vernova supports Quinbrook to deliver all three stages of one of Australia’s largest battery energy storage projects

4 min read
  • Latest contract expands GE Vernova’s role across all three stages of Quinbrook’s Supernode project

  • Completed development expected to provide 780 MW and 3,075 MWh of battery storage for the Supernode campus at one strategic site

  • Stage 3 has achieved Generator Performance Standards (GPS) acceptance and will mark GE Vernova’s first grid-forming battery energy storage project in Australia

BRISBANE, Australia, (21 August) – GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) today announced it has been chosen by Quinbrook for the third stage of the Supernode Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Queensland. With this contract, GE Vernova will provide power conversion, control and integration technologies across all three stages of one of Australia’s largest battery energy storage developments.

Supernode is a large-scale battery storage development located at a key point in Queensland’s electricity network. The batteries act as a buffer for the power system, storing electricity when supply is high and returning it to the grid when demand increases or renewable generation changes. This helps maintain a reliable electricity supply while enabling more renewable energy to be integrated into the network.

Stages 1 and 2, which use GE Vernova technology, are now in full operation and are among the largest operational battery energy storage facilities in Australia’s National Electricity Market. Stage 3 will add a further 260 MW and 1,216 MWh of four-hour storage, bringing the full Supernode development to 780 MW and 3,075 MWh at a single site.

For Stage 3, GE Vernova will provide the power conversion system, plant controls, system integration and grid-connection support.

Stage 3 has already achieved Generator Performance Standards (GPS) acceptance, an important grid-connection milestone. GPS acceptance establishes the agreed technical performance standards applicable to the project’s connection to Australia’s National Electricity Market.

“Battery storage is becoming part of the operating foundation of modern electricity systems,” said Ed Torres, Business Leader Power Conversion & Storage, GE Vernova’s Electrification segment. “Supernode shows what is possible when storage, power conversion and intelligent controls work together at scale. Our engineering and integration work helped Supernode Stage 3 secure Generator Performance Standards acceptance. This important grid-connection milestone demonstrates the strength of our technology and our ability to support complex projects in Australia’s demanding grid-connection environment. We are proud to expand our partnership with Quinbrook and bring grid-forming technology to Australia.”

“From the outset, Supernode was designed as more than just a battery storage project. Its unique location at the heart of Queensland's transmission network makes it ideally placed to support the state’s transitioning power system well into the future. The site also has capacity for a further 520 MW of expansion, which could include battery storage, data centres or a combination of both. Opportunities to develop infrastructure at this scale, in such a strategically connected location, are exceptionally rare,” said James Allan, Senior Director, Quinbrook.

Grid-forming technology extends the role of batteries by enabling them to actively support system stability, providing some of the capabilities historically delivered by conventional power plants, including frequency support and system strength.

GE Vernova’s battery energy storage technologies combine power conversion, controls and integration expertise to help customers store and manage electricity, strengthen grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy.

"Meeting rising electricity demand will require more than adding generation, it demands a grid that can coordinate, adapt, and act faster than ever before," said Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification segment. "Software is now central to how utilities plan investments, operate networks, and respond to near real-time conditions. What we're introducing at Orchestrate reflects our conviction that the grid of the future runs on intelligence and that utilities need that intelligence across every layer, from long-range planning to the grid edge."

Orchestrate 2026: Bringing the Industry Together to Drive Grid Modernization

Orchestrate is GE Vernova's annual conference for utility leaders and grid operators to engage with the software strategies and technologies redefining grid modernization. This year's agenda reflects the mounting pressures utilities face: surging load, deeper renewable integration, and frequent extreme weather and the growing role software plays in helping them respond.

Today's announcements reinforce GE Vernova's position that software is no longer a layer on top of the grid – it is a core enabler of faster, more coordinated decisions across planning and operations, and the only mechanism capable of addressing a coordination problem that is beyond human scale.

GridOS for Transmission

GE Vernova's Grid Software business today introduces GridOS for Transmission, a unified grid intelligence solution for operating and orchestrating the transmission network as one system. By bringing together near real-time operations, capacity awareness, forecasting, and system stability into a single coordinated environment, GridOS for Transmission helps utilities shorten control room decision cycles, improve utilization of existing transmission capacity, and respond faster to rapidly changing grid conditions.

The solution integrates intelligence from core transmission applications including AEMS (Advanced Energy Management System), DDLR (Digital Dynamic Line Rating), WAMS (Wide-Area Monitoring System), and forecasting tools, alongside DER management, Visual Intelligence, and asset behavior data, giving operators a unified, context-rich decision environment.

With this operating model, utilities can reduce decision latency, operate closer to actual system limits, identify emerging stability risks earlier, and respond more effectively during disturbances and peak-stress events.

New AI Whitepapers on Grid Planning and Grid-Edge Operations

GE Vernova today released two whitepapers addressing complementary dimensions of AI's role in utility operations. Both whitepapers are coming from GE Vernova's Grid Automation and Software business.

"Reimagining the Grid Edge: Autonomous Distribution Technologies as the Key to Managing Decentralization and Enhancing Resilience," outlines how Autonomous Distribution (AD) enables utilities to detect, isolate, and restore faults in seconds rather than minutes. The paper covers AI capabilities at the grid edge including adaptive zone management, predictive controls, software-defined architecture, and integration with existing EMS and ADMS environments. By empowering grid operators to manage distributed assets, AD improves grid resilience, adjusts to evolving demands, reduces costs, and increases efficiency, paving the way for a fault-tolerant future in a decentralized energy landscape.

"AI in Grid Planning: Unlock Resilience, Faster Decisions, and Lower Costs,"  outlines how utilities can apply AI to long-range planning, interconnection analysis, forecasting, and risk management, all anchored by a living, digital grid twin. Use cases include interconnection backlog reduction, non-wires alternatives analysis, vegetation- and wildfire-risk management, storm preparedness, and advanced load and generation forecasting.

Together, the whitepapers underscore GE Vernova's view that utilities need intelligence across the full grid lifecycle, from planning investments years ahead to managing near real-time operations from the control room to the grid edge.
