GE Vernova secures agreement to power 49 MW onshore wind project in Spain

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK (April 8, 2025) - GE Vernova’s Wind segment announced today that it has signed an agreement to provide Forestalia with eight of its 6.1 MW-158m* workhorse wind turbines to power a 49 MW wind project in Aragón, Spain. The deal, which was booked in the first quarter of 2025, is part of a framework agreement that the two companies first announced in December of 2023 to support the development of projects in the Aragorn region of Spain.

Spain has a goal of installing 62 GW of wind in the country by 2030, part of its plan to generate over 80 percent of its electricity from renewable resources by the end of the decade.

GE Vernova has a strong presence in Spain, accounting for 5.9 GW of the country’s wind capacity, including 1.5 GW in the Aragorn region. GE Vernova’s Wind segment also has a significant manufacturing footprint, including facilities in Ponferrada and Castellon.

Gilan Sabatier, GE Vernova’s Chief Commercial Officer of onshore wind, international markets said, “We are pleased to continue executing on our framework agreement with Forestalia as they work to help meet Spain’s wind energy goals. Our workhorse turbines are well suited to wind conditions in Spain and across Europe, as customers continue to look to wind power to meet energy demand, bolster energy security, and support renewable energy goals.”

Forestalia promotes, develops and builds projects in wind energy, photovoltaics, electric generation through biomass, and pellet production. Forestalia has driven and participates in a portfolio with an operational capacity of over 2 GW, with a socially responsible vision aligned especially with the rural areas where the facilities are located.

“Forestalia has a growing portfolio in operation and construction, which will exceed an installed capacity of 1.2 GW for direct management in the coming years”, says Carlos Reyero, Forestalia’s CEO.

Among the projects promoted and developed by Forestalia for construction and operation by other operators, notable ones include parks for Repsol, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), Lightsource BP and Bruc Management, totaling more than 4 GW, with the majority already in operation.

GE Vernova wind turbines power the start of operations for largest onshore wind farm in Japan, located in Fukushima

TOKYO, Japan (April 3, 2025) - GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind business announced today that the Abukuma wind farm has begun producing power after reaching its Commercial Operation Date (COD). The 147 MW wind farm is powered by 46 3.2 MW–103m* onshore wind turbines.

The Abukuma wind farm is part of Fukushima Fukko Furyoku, LLC, a joint venture established by a consortium of nine companies, led by Sumitomo Corporation, to develop and operate onshore wind power projects in the Abukuma area of Fukushima as part of the prefecture's reconstruction efforts. The project, under the leadership of Sumitomo Corporation, exemplifies successful international collaboration in support of Japan’s renewable energy expansion, combining GE Vernova’s advanced technology and project leader, Toshiba Corporation’s strong execution capabilities.

The Abukuma wind farm, located in the Abukuma area, is the largest onshore wind farm in Japan. It provides enough electricity to power the equivalent of 120,000 Japanese households. This project plays a pivotal role in advancing Fukushima’s reconstruction efforts following the 2011 incident, contributing to economic revitalization and energy resilience in the region.

The project supports Japan’s goal of increasing the share of the national electricity mix from renewable energy from 40% to 50% by 2040 towards positioning renewable energy as the country’s main power source, as outlined by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s 7th National Electricity Mix. The announcement represents the fifth time that GE Vernova has announced an order or milestone in Japan since the beginning of 2024 and the wind farm is part of 1.8 GW of energy being supplied in the country by GE Vernova wind turbines.

GE Vernova’s Pensacola energy surge: Over 2.7 GW of U.S.-built turbines fuel SunZia build out and U.S. wind farm upgrades

PENSACOLA, FL. (March 27, 2025) – GE Vernova today announced three key milestones that reinforce the Pensacola factory’s role in supporting U.S. energy abundance, affordability, and security. The company’s Florida factory has:

  • Produced enough turbines to supply over 1.2 GW of the 2.4 GWs of orders GE Vernova will supply for the SunZia wind farm in New Mexico that will be the largest wind farm in the Western hemisphere when it comes online.
  • Received new orders for 109 wind turbines for RWE New Energy projects in Texas that will begin deliveries later this year.
  • Manufactured nearly 500 repower turbines since 2024, enough to supply over 850 MWs to repower projects across the US.

The new milestones were highlighted in Pensacola during a ribbon cutting event hosted by GE Vernova CEO Scott Strazik for the facility’s new customer experience center, which features multiple conference rooms, collaboration and networking areas, and direct access to the production space.

Strazik said, ”American workers at GE Vernova factories are powering the world as we see a historic investment in the energy sector. The roughly $70 million we’ve invested in Pensacola since 2023 is enabling us to help meet America’s and the world’s accelerating energy demand. Such strategic investments and the jobs they create in the U.S. aim to both help our customers meet the doubling of demand and accelerate American innovation and technology development to boost the country’s energy security and global competitiveness.”

Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said, “GE Vernova’s partnership at the Port of Pensacola and continued investment in the city are a testament to our skilled workforce and its strategic importance in the growing energy sector. The jobs created here, and the turbines produced, are not only powering projects across the nation but also fueling economic growth right here at home.”

The investments in Pensacola were a key component of an announcement GE Vernova made in January that it will invest nearly $600 million in its U.S. factories and facilities over the next two years to help meet the surging electricity demands around the world. The new investments – expected to create more than 1,500 new U.S. jobs – will help drive U.S. energy affordability, national security, and competitiveness, and enable the American manufacturing footprint needed to support expanding global exports.

GE Vernova to equip two RWE wind farms in Texas with over 100 turbines, boosting US jobs and energy security

SCHENECTADY, NY (March 18, 2025) - GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced today that it has entered into an agreement with RWE to provide 109 of its 2.8 MW–127m* onshore wind turbines to power the Honey Mesquite wind farm in Glasscock County, Texas and repower the Forest Creek Wind Farm near Big Spring, Texas. The Forest Creek deal was booked in the second quarter of 2024, and the Honey Mesquite order was booked in the third quarter of 2024. Deliveries of the wind turbines for both projects are scheduled to begin later this year.

The projects will bring RWE’s rebuilt and repowered wind capacity across the U.S. to more than 1 gigawatt (GW). RWE estimates the wind farms will support about hundreds of full-time jobs during peak construction and will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 85,000 homes and business annually in Texas. The projects also supports several hundred long-term, advanced manufacturing jobs at GE Vernova’s Pensacola facility that will supply equipment used at the wind farms.

GE Vernova is leveraging its robust domestic supply chain and manufacturing capabilities for this project, with the nacelles for the turbines being produced at GE Vernova's facility in Pensacola, Florida. This manufacturing facility supports U.S. energy abundance, affordability, and security, and employs a workforce comprising approximately 20 percent veterans, highlighting GE Vernova's dedication to both fostering local job creation and honoring those who have served the United States.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (March 4, 2025) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) and Amazon Web Services, Inc (AWS), an Amazon.com, Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), today announced the signing of a strategic framework agreement (SFA) aimed at supporting AWS’s data center scaling, and collaborating to address increasing global energy demand, advance grid security and reliability, and decarbonize electric power systems.

Through this collaboration, GE Vernova will provide AWS with new offerings across a broad scope of solutions to electrify and decarbonize data centers across North America, Europe, and Asia, including:

  • Electrification Systems: GE Vernova will continue to provide AWS with turnkey substation solutions to enable connectivity of AWS data centers to the grid, including expansion of major electrical equipment, project management, and construction support, across multiple sites globally. AWS and GE Vernova engineering teams will continue to work together to optimize data center substation design and delivery.
  • Renewables: GE Vernova will collaborate with AWS to enhance the path for commercializing onshore wind development projects.
  • Power Generation, Innovation and Services: GE Vernova and AWS will also explore additional opportunities for GE Vernova to provide power generation equipment and services to AWS as well as work with GE Vernova’s accelerator businesses – Advanced Research, Consulting Services, and Financial Services – to advance energy transition innovation, research, project development, and financing.

Under this new collaboration, AWS will provide GE Vernova cloud services solutions to advance its cloud migration and digital innovation efforts, including through generative AI. AWS’s cutting-edge capabilities will support GE Vernova’s continued transformation as a standalone, public company as it enhances its systems and processes and further embeds sustainability and innovation into its core operations. The extended collaboration will introduce new potential technologies and cloud services, including AWS High Performance Computing (HPC). The collaboration will also help GE Vernova accelerate development cycles and optimize operations for advanced digital technology solutions through large computational power and cloud elasticity. AWS and GE Vernova will further work together to identify opportunities to accelerate GE Vernova’s operational goals, leveraging AWS technologies in artificial intelligence, big data, and data analytics.

Additionally, AWS will continue to collaborate with GE Vernova’s Electrification Software business to help support AWS Cloud deployments of software for the electric grid, power generation, and manufacturing industries.

SCHENECTADY, NY. (January 17, 2025) - GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind business announced that it received orders in 2024 to repower over 1 gigawatt of wind turbines in the U.S. The projects will use nacelles and drive trains manufactured in the U.S. at GE Vernova’s Pensacola, Florida facility, where approximately 20 percent of the workforce are veterans, to support U.S. energy abundancy, affordability, and security.

“As the United States works to meet the doubling of projected demand for more energy, repower projects like these help U.S. workers in U.S. factories take advantage of what we already have, where we already have it. Employees in our Pensacola facility and at the locations of partners across the supply chain are working to help us get the most out of our valuable energy assets already in the ground,” said Matt Lynch, General Manager of Repower at GE Vernova.

The orders were booked between the first and fourth quarters of 2024. These repower projects are expected to reach their commercial operation date between 2024 and 2027. The technical benefits of repowering are clear: Repowering increases the size, output, and longevity of existing turbines to capture more reliable renewable energy for a longer period of time. On a repowered project, older units are replaced with new, higher capacity turbines.

TOKYO (January 9, 2025) - GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind business announced today that it has signed an order to provide 14 4.2MW-117m* turbines for the Iwaya and Shitsukari wind farms being developed by Eurus near Higashidori, Aomori Japan. The order was secured in the fourth quarter of 2024 and the projects are expected to reach commercial operations in 2028.

The projects will enable both companies to support Japan’s goal of increasing the share of the national electricity mix from renewable energy from 36% to 38% by 2030, as outlined by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s 6th National Electricity Mix. The announcement represents the fourth time that GE Vernova has announced an order or milestone in Japan since the beginning of 2024, and will bring the total amount of energy being supplied in the country by GE Vernova wind turbines to 1.8 GW.

GEベルノバの陸上風力発電事業は本日、株式会社ユーラスエナジーホールディングスから、青森県東通村に建設中のユーラス岩屋ウインドファーム・ユーラス尻労ウインドファーム向けに、4.2MW-117mタービン*14基を受注したと発表しました。 今回の受注は2024年第4四半期に計上され、2028年の商業運転開始を目指しています。

今回のプロジェクトにより、両社は経済産業省が策定した「第6次エネルギー基本計画」で掲げられた、2030年までに再生可能エネルギーの割合を36%から38%に引き上げるという日本の目標達成を支援します。また本件は、GEベルノバが2024年以降日本で発表した受注または契約締結のプロジェクトとして4件目となり、これによりGEベルノバ製風力タービンが日本で供給する累積導入量は1.8GWに達します。

NISKAYUNA, New York (December 19, 2024) – Signaling a significant alliance in the energy transition landscape, GE Vernova’s (NYSE: GEV) Advanced Research Center (ARC) has supplied a 3.4-140m, 81m hub height wind turbine to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This transaction represents a deeper, strategic relationship aimed at enabling groundbreaking collaborative research using GE Vernova's assets - underscoring the potential for government and private sector cooperation to drive innovation and progress in critical areas of energy research.

GE Vernova’s 3.4 MW-140m wind turbine will serve as the research platform with NREL, the leading US government laboratory on wind research, in a project funded through a Department of Energy (DOE) solicitation. The fields of exploration encompass several critical areas, each aimed at advancing wind technology and energy systems, including grid testing, installation and services technologies, sensors and controls, mechanical systems, advanced aerodynamic solutions, direct current (DC) coupling and battery energy storage systems (BESS), and hydrogen electrolyzers to improve energy efficiency and storage. These areas align with GE Vernova’s strategic priority to facilitate widescale deployment of large-scale wind energy systems – key to which are advancements in sensors that expand observability, advanced models that capture complex atmospheric and structural behaviors, and sophisticated algorithms and analytics that optimize turbine coordination and resilience.

This collaboration not only advances wind technology but also renewable energy solutions. NREL is particularly interested in using this turbine to research green hydrogen production. Wind energy, which can be more consistent than solar, can significantly boost the efficiency and scale of hydrogen production, contributing to lower carbon energy alternatives. This research focuses on directly coupling wind turbines into a DC power architecture, enabling smoother integration with electrolysis systems rather than connecting them to the grid. This dedicated approach is particularly crucial for heavy industries like steel manufacturing, where a steady supply of green hydrogen supports decarbonization and creating a more sustainable global economy.

The 3.4 MW-140m turbine will be installed in 2026 at the NREL Flatirons site, home of the National Wind Technology Center, in Colorado, where it will join a fleet of equipment dedicated to advancements in energy research.

Integração para a descarbonização: respostas para desafios do setor elétrico no Brasil

Em novembro deste ano, a matriz elétrica brasileira atingiu o marco de mais de 228 GW em capacidade instalada, sendo uma das maiores e mais diversificadas globalmente. A participação de fontes de energia renováveis ​​como hidrelétrica, eólica, solar e biomassa, respondem por mais de 90% do total, fazendo do Brasil o país do G20 que possui a matriz elétrica com maior uso de energias renováveis, de acordo com estudo da Ember Climate

Essa realidade é bastante favorável para o país, principalmente no contexto da transição energética, que almeja ajudar no combate às alterações climáticas resultantes do aquecimento global. Uma das maneiras de limitar esse aquecimento é justamente por meio da descarbonização, ponto fundamental da transição.

No Brasil, o setor de energia não é o principal emissor de carbono. De acordo com um estudo da Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE), em 2022, estima-se que a produção e o uso de energia tenham correspondido a apenas 24% das emissões brasileiras de gases de efeito estufa (GEE), número explicado pela matriz energética diversificada e com ampla participação de fontes renováveis. Contudo, a descarbonização do setor elétrico é chave tanto para reduzir ainda mais sua participação direta nas emissões, quanto para apoiar os demais setores que precisam de eletrificação e descarbonização, como o setor de transporte, unindo esforços para ajudar a combater o aquecimento global.

Diante disso, o crescimento de fontes como a eólica e a solar segue como um dos principais pilares da descarbonização, inserindo ainda mais energia renováve na matriz que apoiará as demandas por uma eletrificação eficiente e sustentável. Há algumas décadas, essas fontes – até então consideradas alternativas – ainda não figuravam nas estatísticas de geração de energia com os primeiros projetos sendo iniciados apenas no final dos anos 2000. Hoje, a realidade é bem diferente, e essas mesmas fontes já respondem por mais de 20% da matriz elétrica brasileira, número que deve chegar aos 23% em 2028, segundo a projeção do Operador Nacional do Sistema (ONS).

INTEGRAÇÃO É CHAVE PARA A DESCARBONIZAÇÃO

Espera-se que o crescimento da geração eólica e solar continue especialmente considerando os objetivos da transição energética. Contudo, esse crescimento vem acompanhado de grandes desafios, dada a intermitência característica dessas fontes, por exemplo, considerando que há períodos nos quais os ventos não estão soprando com todo seu potencial e o sol deixa de incidir sobre os parques solares.

Um parque solar com turbinas eólicas ao fundo

Para equilibrar o sistema, outras fontes entram em ação e destacam a importância de seu papel ao complementar a rede elétrica conforme a demanda, fornecendo energia despachável. Uma dessas fontes é a hidráulica, que detém a maior participação na matriz elétrica do país, sendo sua principal fonte de energia renovável há décadas e uma grande aliada da transição energética. Cláudio Trejger, CEO da unidade de Hydro Power para a América Latina, alerta para o fato de que as usinas hidrelétricas brasileiras estão operando há décadas e é fundamental investir também na modernização delas. Esse tipo de serviço ajuda a prolongar a vida útil desses ativos, melhorando a eficiência e otimizando a utilização do recurso hídrico disponível para atender à demanda de eletricidade no país. “Existe uma grande oportunidade para aumentar a potência em várias usinas, porém as geradoras não têm explorado esta possibilidade, pois aguardam a revisão das regras vigentes. A modernização ajuda a aumentar a eficiência e tornar a usina estar disponível por mais tempo, oferecendo maior segurança ao fornecimento de energia. Para isso, nossos times trabalham integrando serviços e tecnologias para otimizar as operações de hidrelétricas como no caso da maior atualização tecnológica da Itaipu Binacional (segunda maior usina hidrelétrica do mundo), e do projeto de modernização da Usina Hidrelétrica de São Simão. Também gostaria de destacar a possibilidade de implantar Usinas Reversíveis, tecnologia oferecida pela GE Vernova, e que pode assumir um importante papel no programa de transição energética do país”, disse Cláudio.

Outra fonte que também tem a capacidade necessária de despacho para complementar as fontes intermitentes e apoiar a atuação da fonte hidráulica, em especial quando o país enfrenta crises hídricas, é o gás natural. Daniel Meniuk, VP de Serviços para América Latina para Gas Power, afirma que “no Brasil, as termelétricas modernas a gás natural, como as usinas do Complexo AzulãoPorto de Sergipe I, fazem a diferença ao ajudar a complementar e a manter nossa rede estável, oferecendo energia segura, confiável e cada dia mais sustentável dada a melhoria constante da tecnologia utilizada." Segundo ele, além de fornecer uma fonte confiável e complementar à geração renovável, as emissões de turbinas a gás podem ser ainda mais reduzidas no futuro usando hidrogênio como combustível e tecnologias de captura de carbono. "No portfólio da GE Vernova, já temos turbinas a gás natural capazes de queimar hidrogênio, de acordo com a demanda do cliente e a infraestrutura da planta. Um exemplo disso ocorre na planta DeBary da Duke Energy, que deve se tornar uma das primeiras usinas de energia em operação comercial a produzir, armazenar e queimar 100% por volume de hidrogênio verde para aplicações relacionadas aos picos de energia", conclui.

MAIS QUE UMA GERAÇAO EFICIENTE, ESTABILIDADE NA ENTREGA

Se a integração de diferentes fontes precisa ser muito bem orquestrada para permitir o crescimento sustentável das fontes renováveis sem prejudicar o abastecimento de energia, gerenciar a qualidade da operação da rede, com foco na estabilidade e segurança da rede elétrica, também é fundamental.

“A rede elétrica é uma das invenções humanas mais complexas que existem. E quando a gente tem mais eólica e solar entrando, a gente tem flutuações de rede e, consequentemente na qualidade da energia que está sendo entregue em todo o país. Por isso, essa rede tem que ser monitorada e condicionada”, afirma Renato Yabiku, CTO para América Latina na unidade de Power Conversion. “A GE Vernova traz um portfólio completo de soluções (hardwares e softwares), desde a geração até a parte de estabilização, seja por meio de programas de orquestração da rede. Como exemplo, destaco os compensadores síncronos, equipamentos que servem justamente para aumentar a capacidade e a estabilidade do Sistema Interligado Nacional (SIN), oferecendo maior qualidade e segurança à transmissão de energia elétrica mesmo em condições adversas. Essa tecnologia ajuda a evitar interrupções e apagões e complementa outras como o STATCOM,  que é uma espécie de inversor conectado à rede para dar potência de forma reativa, contribuindo para a estabilização”, explica.

Nesse sentido, Sergio Binda, Líder de Grid Automation para a GE Vernova na América Latina, reforça que a empresa também possui soluções digitais e integradas com poder de computação aumentada, desenvolvidas para gerenciar a rede, visando maior segurança, confiabilidade, capacidade e resiliência na transmissão de energia. “Quando pensamos em uma solução para a rede, inclusive visando a estabilização, existem tecnologias para dar respostas a eventos como uma falha ou um curto-circuito. Esses pacotes de software, como o GridOSGridBeats, por exemplo, oferecem modelos adequados para cada um dos equipamentos”, afirma. Binda ainda destaca que essas soluções próprias trazem mais valor e uma resposta mais assertiva e segura para aqueles que geram energia e operam o sistema.
