Japan’s energy sector wants a safer power supply that’s economically efficient and environmentally sustainable.

The challenge

In the face of strict environmental regulation—and the desire for greater efficiency—Japan is racing to integrate as much as 24% renewable energy into its grid by 2030. Electricity generated from biomass could even triple during this time as, together with hydro and geothermal, it represents a stable renewable energy supply regardless of weather conditions.

The solution

The Hitachi Zosen Corporation has been commissioned to deliver a full turnkey 50 MW biomass power plant in Kamisu City. They selected GE Steam Power to design, manufacture, and supply all key components for the Kamisu Biomass Power Generation plant. GE’s integrated-power package includes a boiler, steam turbine generator, and air quality control systems for reliable operations.

Located in Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan, the Kamisu Biomass Power Generation plant will use 100% biomass comprising palm kernel shells and wood pellets, generating 50 MW of dependable power to the national grid. The plant will be equipped with GE’s low-NOx circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler, a high-efficiency dust-removal fabric filter, and a reheat steam turbine with its generator.
