Bazyan Power Plant first to implement 9E AGP XPAND upgrade
Upgrade expected to boost the power output and efficiency of the 9E.03 gas turbines at Iraq’s Bazyan power plant.
Overview
ONEX Group, a private energy group experienced in, among other things, power generation and utilities sought ways to make its 1,250 MW Bazyan power station in Kurdistan, Iraq, even more productive.
ONEX will implement GE Vernova’s AGP XPAND upgrade—an evolution of the Advanced Gas Path (AGP) process—at Bazyan. The upgrade will improve the plant’s overall output and efficiency while keeping its reliability, availability, and maintenance schedule largely unchanged.
Outcomes
We are proud that Taurus, part of the ONEX Group, is leading the way in bringing this breakthrough technology to Iraq. Through projects like Bazyan, we can contribute to the efforts to meet local energy needs as well as transmit additional power to other parts of the country.

The Bazyan power plant supplies much-needed electricity to Iraq’s Kurdistan region as well as nearby Mosul, Kirkuk, and Salahaldin. Partially operating since 2016, Bazyan is a combined cycle plant that employs four GE Vernova 9E.03 gas turbines and is configured to output a maximum of 1,250 MW.
In 2025, Taurus Energy—one of ONEX Group’s holdings and Bazyan’s operator—took steps to further boost the plant’s output by implementing GE Vernova’s AGP XPAND upgrade to its turbines. This upgrade includes revised materials and sealings from GE Vernova’s innovative Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrade that helps enable a substantial increase in the 9E turbine’s firing temperature while simultaneously lengthening maintenance and outage intervals.
“GE Vernova has the largest operating and most experienced E-class fleet in the world and confirms its commitment to keep its mature fleets competitive in today’s dynamic marketplace,” said Amit Kulkarni, Head of Product Management & Strategy, Gas Power at GE Vernova. “Improving existing technologies is the fastest way to inject power to the grid.”
Additionally, ONEX and Taurus will bring the first 9E rotor life extension package to Iraq as part of a 17-year long-term service agreement between it and GE Vernova.
