Overview

The outage showcased GE Vernova’s ability to manage large-scale outages using integrated local and global resources.

The challenge

Kwinana Power Station needed support for a large-scale planned outage and sought to improve outcomes compared with previous events. Key priorities included:

  • More effective outage planning and coordination
  • Enhanced safety performance across a large workforce
  • Reduced outage duration without compromising quality or compliance

The solution

GE Vernova delivered an integrated outage services model that combined:

  • Local One Field Services crews with global technical specialists
  • Digital outage planning and execution tools, including Field Vision*
  • LEAN processes enabling simultaneous gas and steam turbine inspections

This approach enabled improved coordination, task sequencing, and real-time visibility across all outage activities.

Supporting a faster and smoother outage

The outage demonstrated GE Vernova’s capability to manage complex, multi-discipline outages at scale, while maintaining enhanced safety and execution standards.

Kwinana Power Station is a 328 MW combined-cycle gas-fired facility located 30 km (~19 miles) south of Perth, Australia. Using low-emission technologies and advanced water-recycling systems, it contributes to electricity generation producing lower emissions and supports grid stability in the Southwest Interconnected System (SWIS), supplying approximately 10% of Western Australia’s electricity demand.

The outage involved over 300 personnel working six days a week during the assessment phase and was the first outage and first CSA at Kwinana Power Station in Western Australia since we regained NewGen Power Company Pty. Ltd. as a customer.

  • Location: Kwinana Power Station, Naval Base, Western Australia
  • Facility name: Kwinana Power/ NewGen Power Kwinana
  • Gas turbine type: GT13E2

When we have an outage of this magnitude safety and quality come first, having a good partner with GE Vernova certainly helps us achieve that.
