Fast-start aeroderivative technology will help Hawaii balance growing renewable generation while maintaining reliable power on an isolated island grid.

The challenge

Hawaiian Electric needed to replace aging oil-fired steam turbines that had been operating for nearly seven decades while maintaining reliable power for Oʻahu's isolated electric grid. The new solution needed to fit within the existing plant footprint, support renewable energy growth, and provide the operational flexibility required for a modern power system.

The solution

GE Vernova will supply six LM6000VELOX aeroderivative gas turbine packages to repower the Waiau Power Plant. The project includes modular, fuel-flexible, fast-start generation technology designed for installation within the existing facility while reusing much of the site's existing infrastructure.

The project will repower the facility with proven, fuel-flexible and modern technology. This represents the most significant modernization of the O‘ahu generation infrastructure in decades and it will strengthen the reliability and resilience of our system while supporting the integration of more renewable resources like solar and energy storage.

Six aeroderivative gas turbine packages will replace oil-fired steam turbine units that have been in operation for 58 to 67 years. The first two units are scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2029, with the remaining units commissioned in phases.

Why aeroderivative technology?
Hawaii's isolated electric grid requires generation that can respond quickly as renewable output changes. LM6000VELOX units can reach full load in less than 10 minutes, providing the operational flexibility needed to support grid stability while complementing increasing levels of solar and wind generation.

Fuel flexibility
The units are capable of operating on multiple liquid fuels, including locally produced biofuels, and can be converted to operate on liquefied natural gas if it becomes available.

Community impact
The project will reuse much of the existing Waiau Power Plant infrastructure and remain within the current plant footprint, minimizing construction impacts while modernizing critical generation assets.
