Overview

A 200 MW base-loaded peaking unit generates ~$5,000 per hour at a $25/MWh spark spread, and a multi-day outage trip can cost $500,000+ in lost generation value.

The challenge

The plant's 7FA peaking unit tripped in the fuel gas purge system with no single clear cause.  This placed the unit in a stopped state and removed its output from the dispatch stack. Every hour without a confirmed root cause extended the financial exposure, so with generation offline and no on-site diagnosis available, the operations team called GE Vernova's Remote Diagnostic Services.

The solution

The RDS team connected in 30 minutes via the Remote Services Gateway, reviewing the fault sequence in near real-time. Within an hour, the engineer identified that pressure switch I63PG1BH was detecting pressure when purge block valve VA13-1 was closed, and the 20PG-1 and 20PG-1 solenoids were passing air. Both were replaced and the unit returned to service in under four hours from the initial call.

A fault that could have triggered a multi-day forced outage was resolved in a single shift. Access to live alarm data and sequence of events logs gave the site team a precise repair action, rather than a list of possibilities to work through.
