The first GE power island in Asia

The challenge

The Korea Midland Power Company (KOMIPO) was seeking a small block, high-efficiency power solution to burn imported LNG on Korea’s Jeju Island, a top tourist destination.

The solution

This first power island generation scope project in Asia is a milestone for GE, which provided two gas turbinessteam turbinesHRSGs, and four generators to help reduce OpEx, reduce emissions, and enhance flexibility.

Jeju Island is building its energy self-reliance with power projects that have low environmental impact. However, the region’s small power grid can’t accommodate large H-class or F-class turbines, even when burning LNG.

GE’s power island adds value to Jeju LNG thanks to GE’s acquisition of Alstom, with the HRSGs thanks to the acquisition of Doosan. The efficiency of two GE 6F.03 gas turbines and one STF-A100 steam turbine cuts carbon emissions and OpEx for the Jeju LNG facility. Along with that, KOMIPO Korea gets GE’s full suite of equipment, controls, maintenance, and parts support.

While this marks the fifth power project with KOMIPO, this is the first power island integration for GE in Asia. The added power island generation showcases the advances of technology integration through the HRSGs.

The 250-MW combined-cycle power plant—an energy supply equivalent to about 600,000 Korean homes—is expected to serve KOMIPO’s long-term operational needs, supplying about 20% of the total power demand to the Jeju region.
