GE Gas Power’s business, together with Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), announced the first multi-year agreement in the Gulf region for HA-class gas turbines, to power the world’s largest single site smelter in Manama, Bahrain. GE will also deliver three HA gas turbines for Alba’s combined-cycle power plant, Power Station 5.

This historic agreement will use high availability (HA) technology to enhance and drive performance, predictability, profitability, and efficiency. Equally important, the agreement marks the first order of H-class turbines by the aluminum smelting industry anywhere in the world.

GE and GAMA, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner, will together oversee the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning, including maintenance and repair, digital remote support, onsite personnel support and more, for the 1,792 megawatts (MW) Power Station 5.

Apart from allowing for increased power capacity, supporting the plants' smelter expansion, the HA technology will also extend outage intervals and offer industry leading flexibility, allowing customers to maintain stable power production and reliably accommodate grid variations through quick start up, rapid load changes and other features.

Moreover, GE’s Digital Power Plant software solutions will play a significant role in helping Alba reach its business goals, offering predictive insights for higher reliability. Additionally, Alba will have the ability to customize and fine-tune the plant over its lifetime, adding to its success.
