Myanmar’s energy challenge

Myanmar Lighting owns a 230 MW combined-cycle gas power plant located in Ngan Tae, Mawlamyine that is powered by three 6B gas turbines and one LM2500 gas turbine supplied by GE that have been in operation since 2014. Knowing that the 6B gas turbine rotor end life was approaching in 2022, the customer needed a long-term solution to ensure that the plant could continue to support the growth and needs of the people of Myanmar.

The solution

Instead of a routine upgrade, GE proposed a 6B rotor total life management solution to enable the operators to make the most of cycle times for parts manufacturing, improve outage labor efficiencies and utilize a rotor concept that will reduce overall costs.

The GE team proposed a Rotor Life Extension (RLE) program that includes one new 6B GT rotor and two 6B RLEs. The solution will enable Myanmar Lighting to extend the power plant’s rotor life for the duration of its operation—about 10 to 15 years—while delivering enhanced reliability and availability and leveraging the plant’s existing rotor assets.

The latest suite of solutions provided by GE is expected to be implemented in a phased manner, working closely with Global Repair Solutions Singapore (GRSS) to enable the power plant to continue supplying reliable electricity to the national grid.
